Better idle...what happened?

It's been months since I've posted. Good to be back at the board. Thought I'd solicit opinions on my car's idle (stock '74 911 CIS). I always start per the manual - hand throttle up until warm and then whatever is necessary to maintain just under 1000 rpm's. This has worked fine for me since I bought the well-maintained car back in December of last year, but for the past couple of months, it hasn't idled very well unless i keep the hand throttle almost all of the way up all of the time...put it down and it would likely stall.

Had a theory that all it needed was to be run hard and burn carbon off of the plugs, so I took it on two three hour trips (driving particularly fast) and replaced the battery. Now the car idles just fine - hand throttle up to start for a few minutes then all the way down and it idles great...maybe a little high (1100-1200). This sounds dumb...did my car fix it's own idle just by giving it a good hard driving?

Since I posted this in September, my knowledge of CIS, etc. has jumped by leaps and bounds. Almost funny to see my old post now that I'm such a 'pro'!

I've since learned how to replace points, use a dwell meter, check and set timing, adjust idle air bypass, etc. and no more of this problem. It seems the more I work on this car, the more I want to work on this car...and so on...
