Vacuum Canister Front Left Fender ?

1978 911 SC.
There is what seems to be a vacuum canister up under the front left fender, and above the windshield washer reservoir. It has a 3/8 in line and a skinny 1/8 in line.
They are both braided, with clamps, looks to be original.

But the skinny one has been worn through, rubbing on the car body, so is a vacuum leak. So, whatever this is for has not worked for some time.

I thought it was power brakes vacuum reserve canister? But maybe not. I looked in my Bentley manual but did not find anything.

Should I fix it and leave it in there? Do I need it?

It's an evaporation chamber from your fuel tank. If it's the same as an 88, the skinny line off the top goes all the way to the rear right fender to the carbon canister. It's part of your evaporative emission control system. There are many threads about the pros and cons of removing it.

if your saving weight and not worried about emissions, remove it all the way back to the canister in the engine bay, plug the nipple on the fuel tank. The car won't blow up when fueling!!

Thanks! , I looked up the other threads about this. I will just leave it there, and fix that one skinny line.

That's not how you properly vent a fuel tank. Even cars without charcoal canisters have a vented tank and a fuel expansion tank. It weighs little and it's somewhat pointless to remove it.

In my situation, I only have the expansion tank and have discarded the under front fender vapor tank and charcoal canister under the rear fender. Where should the small line from the expansion tank go to? Let it hang down inside the front fender? Out the back using existing tunnel tube?
TIA
Johan

On a ROW car, the fuel system vents through a line that passes through the front bulkhead of the trunk, about 6 inches inboard of the left bumper shock mount and a few inches down from the trunk lid opening. The hose is directed down, there's a rubber fitting on the end and there is a metal tab welded to the tub that holds it in place.

The hose comes from the highest point on the vapor tank in the fender, which is the highest point in the fuel tank system, so I don't think I'd run a hose directly from your expansion tank to the front of the tub, without first looping it as high as you can under the front fender.

If it were my car, I'd just put the tank back in and do it right. Gotta be a few of those tanks laying around somewhere.

JR, curious to know what the rubber fitting on the end of the hose does on ROW cars.

Makes it look pretty? Better thing for the tabs to hold?
