Oil cooler upgrade (? about parts from our host)

Hi -

I'd like to upgrade to the Carrera cooler on my SC. On our host's site there are a couple options:

1. Full kit as seen here: Late Style External Factory Oil Cooler Kit PELEXTOIL01N - Graf - PEL-EXTOIL-01N | Pelican Parts
2. Cooler with the adapter kit here: Oil Cooler Adapter Kit 100201053 - O.E.M. - 10-0201-053-M260 | Pelican Parts

It looks like the difference between the two is the stone guard(s), both don't include the foam seal or horn relocation. Everything else looks the same. Option 1 is $700. Option 2 is ~$400. Am I missing something?

-S

I believe M260 doesn't include the actual cooler, while the other one does.

Thanks Jason. I'm aware of that. With the cooler option 2 costs about $400 which is $300 less than the full kit. I'm wondering if I'm missing something or it's a tax placed on the lazy.

There's no room for logic here.

The $700 version includes a $400 cooler and about $125 in stone guard parts...I'm not seeing the problem here. There's also the nifty little bracket that gets bolted/welded to the headlight bucket, which the $700 kit doesn't seem to include.

I guess you could cobble together the parts with the cheaper $200 cooler for about...$200 less...

Alright I'll go with option 2 above whih is the "retrofit kit" that doesn't include the cooler and their $192 cooler. Stone guards are $100 so it's a $500 deal compared to the $700. For $200 it's worth the headache to place another order if need be.

I would agree, I don't expect that the $400 factory cooler is twice as good as the $200 replica...and there are other options if you go into the $700-800 range anyways.

If you click on the tab titled 'kits and compatibility' below the image it lists every piece included in the kit. Looks like everything you need except the foam seal and horn relocating bracket. You can use generic stuff from a big box hardware store for that and fab a horn bracket pretty easily. The other kit doesn't list anything in that tab, but it appears to be only the hoses and lower bracket.

It looks like our sponsor has tidied up the late Carrera style cooler parts into a kit that makes some sense. I had a horrible time about 3 years ago cobbling together individual parts from their catalogue with the help of one of their salesmen on the phone. Ended up sending most of it back.

If I were you, just to be sure, I'd call Chuck Moreland at Elephant Racing and tell him what you need and check the prices. Sounds like all you are trying to do is replace the trombone and on mine I was installing everything from the engine to the front.

Good luck.

Tom

Scott...would definitely advise checking out Elephant Racing website. They have a great interactive building tool with great illustrations, and it's very informative. You can then decide what you need to buy and from whom.

I actually got rid of my engine mounted oil cooler (because it was in the way for a cam position sensor I need for my ECU). I went with (2) Fluidyne oil coolers that I purchased from Summit along with all the lines and fittings. This setup ran me $900. and is FAR superior to the factory setup, and in my opinion, far superior top the other kits on the market. I took measurements of the area I had to work with, and then bought the biggest ones I could fit in there. The fans will be activated by my ECU.
I know you are not getting rid of your engine mounted oil cooler, but, I have never seen oil temps rise hotter than 230 Deg while idling. Then, when the ECU turns on the fans, within 1 minute, my oil temp is below 210 Deg. That is in stop and go traffic jams in the hot summer days of Atlanta, GA. 101 to 104 Deg ambient.

You would only need one of these coolers, and not near as many fittings or line. I would say you could probably source what you need for around $400 or so....
