I'm waiting for the outcomes from his next episode to see if it would help. I happen to have a bunch of hydraulic clutch actuators and some wilwood MCs to try to build my own, I just dont know if it really worth doing it.

I give him an A for effort and a D for execution...the transmission end could be improved, first thought I would have would be to try to find a slave cylinder that fits between the actuation arm and the transmission cable through hole, he does not need all that much hydraulic mechanical advantage as the travel is only a few millimetres and he already gets a big leverage point from the transmission actuator arm. A relatively large piston with a short travel (20 mm?) ought to handle it and the bigger/shorter slave cylinder may well fit within the space.
While his mount is a wonder of fabrication, it does not look like it will be durable and workable long term, those studs he is tying to may not be what he needs, what with a flexiflyer magnesium transmission case and some pretty large and transient forces from repeated clutch actuations. Second would be to us a heim joint rather than a cable to deal with the angularity in the movement. I do not feel all that good about the size of cable he is using or the little screw/pinch clamp he is using to retain it....I worry it will part at the wrong moment and leave him in a bad state. ....but what I love about Jeff is his willingness to put it all out there for us to see....misteaks and all, and he definitely is willing to course correct when he sees something amiss. I have to agree with this, that cable looks a lot smaller than the factory one that doesn't last forever. |

Well, he's a much better fabricator than I am, which may be why he made it more complicated than it needs to be.
Cutting off part of the boss under the transmission is not a problem - later 911s had the bracket as a separate part. In this photo, I modified the mounting of that bracket farther back by one diff cover stud to put it where it is needed. Mounting the slave cylinder is really easy - drill a hole in the transmission support. I have a different clutch pedal to make use of the 3d MC in this modified stock cluster. Alas, I plumbed with 3/16" tube, then read what Hayden had to say about his WEVO setup (for push clutches like Tilton): you need 1/4" tube. In any case, somehow I didn't get a long enough pull with a regular clutch with this setup, and because going back to cable was easy enough I didn't put more effort into getting it to work. Then I switched to a Tilton 5.5" push disk, with cable actuation over on the other side. Works, but I'd like to have hydraulics because you don't have the stretch (plus the effects involved with cable sheath movement).[ |
