Transmission balance point

Ready to drop the transmission.

Where is the balance point of the 915 transmission for jack placement ?

It doesn't matter too much, the tranny doesn't weigh enough to matter. Put the jack roughly in the center and use a free hand to balance it.

Thx fellas.

I'm doing this solo so trying to prepare for loosening the mount and holding on to the transmission at the same time. Having no confidence in my juggling skills and wary of a dropping transmission while I'm under the car, I think I'll use two jacks to start with.

Another question, the 4 screws in the middle of the trans mount, do I need to remove them too ?

Don't forget to disconnect the coupler from the input shaft, just incase it drops/lowers too much.

If you are keeping he gear box in the car leave the 4 bolts in place to help support the gear box.

Gosh, this is really tricky to do it in the car. Take care not to hurt yourself Brother!

I'm removing entire transmission. Does it come out with the mount attached or separate ?

Already disconnected the coupler earlier when I dropped the engine.

Oh, in that case, No leave the 4 bolts as it is part of the cross member assembly, place support under the gear box, remove the two large mounting bolts then remove.

If I were you, I would rig up a wooden box support to keep the gearbox from moving while you ease it out of the tunnel with your jack. Hate for it to roll off to the side.

Got it.

I also have the craftsman motorcycle jack which I can use for a wider support base.

Why didn't you drop the engine and tranny together?

Thought I could get away with not messing with the CV bolts but that turned out fine after all, so here I am. Besides, wrestling a 911 engine off the transmission was something everyone should experience at least once

Wasn't too bad really.

I dropped the engine using a jack onto a furniture dolly. The engine balances quite well alone without the transmission attached. And with the engine out, I can work comfortably in the engine bay on the transmission and cv joints. Safety is paramount of course hence the 2x4s under the rear tires and front chocked. Pulling the transmission straight out while supported by the motorcycle jack was drama free and didn't take much time. Took longer to separate the darn speedo wires without breaking the plastic housing !

That's the intent. Thx for the help, brother !

I like my 2 step drop approach. Yeah, it takes more time but I have that and I spend less time under the car.
