Barn find 964

Hi guys,

a good friend of mine barn found a 1991 964 Carrera 4.
133K miles, manual gearbox, full leather interior, Cup Wheels, Dark grey.

Been sitting inside for 13 years.
Never had any problems and was running perfectly when put away.

It obviously needs some attention.

Replace filters and all fluids
Replace all rubber hoses, fuel lines, brakelines, belts...
Check compression/ leak down.
Check for oil leaks
Check gearbox/clutch
Brakes (disks need replacing)

Of course there will be things I miss here, so let me know what I forgot.

Is a full rebuild mandatory of maybe a top end rebuild?

Help me out here guys, I want this car back on the road safely and have my buddy enjoy his new ride.

Thanks

Rebuild? Why? Follow your initial list, fresh gas, replace ignition cap and rotor, check valve adjustment, fire it up and enjoy...

Nice find

I say get her out, change all the fluids (engine, tranny, brakes, fuel tank!!!!), change the fuel filter.....and see how she goes. Oh and ignore any smoke the first few times you run her. My guess is the brake pads and tires (obviously too old for more than a few "installation" drives as they say in F1) would also need changing for sure. From there.....enjoy and see what else comes up. Some things will, all 3 of my cars had sat before I got them. Eventually belts were replaced, a alternator...little stuff mostly.

Clean it up, then clean it some more, and then when you are all done....clean it again! Make sure the "Mr. Mouse" has not been using it as a "rodent condo".

No rebuild required. This is a Porsche, my good man!

Have a spare DME relay handy. URO products are junk. Have Ingo's email handy, 3.6@cox.net. We both have 964 engines in earlier rides. He has intimate knowledge of the engine and electrical quirks.

Don't these cars have a toothed rubber belt in the dual distributor that is a critical item? I think you'll want to get that replaced.

You can do it yourself, but it seems a bit involved. You'll have to remove the distributor. Here is just one link I found: 964 Distributor Drive Belt

Yes to all the usual stuff for a car that's been sitting a while. And to the distributor drive belt. Also the pic showing the rotors looks kinda crusty. Perhaps they need some attention.
