3.2 intake manifold removal with backdatted heat?

One of my winter projects was to remove my intake manifold for extrude honing. I have yet to really poke around, but I have seen warnings that it is best to drop the engine due to parts that are out of sight.

Now given that i have backdated heat, no ac, no cruise control, it removal more doable? I just do not have the capacity to drop the engine. Tips appreceated.

I did the drivers side with the engine in the car. The only real difficulty I had was removing the old cooked on intake gasket in the rear since the shroud only lets you get to it at 90 degrees.

The back manifold cap screws, and some of the vacuum hose connections, are a real bear to get at, no matter what. Can you do a partial drop? Six inches would help a lot...

You absolutely do not need to drop the engine to pull an intake.

I'm sure taking the intake manifolds off without the engine out could be done. After having seen firsthand how all the different engine pieces fit together, I don't know that I would want to take that on. I would think after you go through taking them out you will want your engine on the ground so you can reinstall the manifolds.

I never had any trouble pulling the intake with it in the car. The one thing missing on my car is the AC compressor but that shouldn't slow you down.

Once you have the intake off I would recommend pulling the shroud as it makes cleaning the top of the engine much easier. I would also recommend making some blockoff plates to cover the intake ports while you are working on it. You can just trace them out of some masonite or plywood using the new gaskets as a stencil.

I did my intake / fuel line refresh without dropping the engine.

taking it apart was not the challenge, but putting it back together again ...

I did my fuel lines 2 years ago and removed the intake without droping the engine. The really tough part was cleaning the intake gaskets off the heads. I did pull the shroud off and got under it to scrape. It can be done.

That is a great photo. Would make for a great gag "no start" post.

No need to do a partial or full engine drop to pull the intake. Personally i thought this was a pretty easy job, once you have the heater parts, airbox and compressor out of the way there is plenty of room to work.

Get a set of long ball seat allen heads, this will help you get some of the harder to reach barrel nuts around the intake runners. Something like these..
