Tail light house seals...

I posted this question buried in the body of a previous post about taking the car to paint... but wanted to call it out specifically. When I was taking off the tail lights, I decided to replace the rubber seals, and found the outer seals easily from our Host, but didn't find a source for the inner seals on the assembly. Anyone have a secret source for the seal that goes between the housing and the back cover? I had one side with a rubber seal, and one side that had plumbers putty...

So I did end up finding some of the U channel on McMaster's site... Item number... 8507K52

McMaster-Carr

Measurements match about exactly... I will take a couple pictures of it and pass along the results when I reinstall the lights...

Here's picts.... for the record, you need about 24" of U-Channel per light housing..

One of the things to consider with the seal is the ground. The early tail light housings had the ground on the rear cover. The putty will seal out the water, but still allow metal to metal contact from the housing to the rear cover. Later housings had the ground wire on the main housing, so rubber seal will not affect the ground.

Interesting that the older ones had an electrical ground strap... the '80 SC has two screws attaching... but no electrical bond... Mine had a rubber seal and no bond....

I tried the McMaster Carr gasket as suggested above - PERFECT!!!!! Now you can remove and replace the cover easily. Caulking or adhesive is a PIA. THANK YOU!
