Gasoline
According to the Shell engineers ethanol gasoline has a 90-day shelf life.
VP Racing has a gasoline with a 2-year half life. I know that the Revs Institute uses the VP gasoline exclusively. ![]() Here's my article on all of this. Richard Newton |

Interesting that they've made a statement about it, perhaps from complaints of ethanol gas going stale and causing problems.
I think we all knew that contemporary fuels didn't have the shelf life like they did years ago but just 90 days..? Even more reason to use a fuel treatment if you have a car in storage. Govt. wants to expand the use of ethanol in 2016 meaning finding 100% gas will be harder and harder to find (non existent in most of AZ for years now).

Sta-Bill is like discussing religion.
There is zero research on the product. All of the information is purely anecdotal. The MSDS says it contains petroleum distillates. People who believe in Sta-Bil are the almost fanatical about the product. But - there is still no scientific research. Richard Newton |

Marine Stabil is a different animal than basic Stabil (and much more expensive)
It is made to deal with the ethanol where basic Stabil just keeps gas from going stale. I put up my boat in September with a tank of gas with Marine Stabil and it starts and runs just like fresh gas the next May. It works!!

The ethanol add is perhaps the worst thing that has even happened to fuel. Yes, it does contribute to the fuel loosing punch by way of oxidation. What makes it worse is when you add water which will always happen to some extent. The Stbl product actually does work because it contains an oxidation inhibitor that is produced by Lubrizol. I know this for a fact a(I know the folks at Lubrizol that deal with this) and there is data to support it. It inhibits oxidation.

I don't know what the difference is between Marine and Regular Stabil, but the regular brand claims to be good for all gas, regular straight to E85. I used to use the Marine, but currently use the standard.
Now, what effect does filling up when at half a tank do to shelf life?

I use Marine Stabil. As best I can find, it contains some sort of corrosion inhibitor (good to protect the wetted parts of my fuel system made of steel) and some magic elixir to keep my fuel from going stale. I drive my 911 regularly and need to fill at least once per month. I figure the combination of the frequent use of my car plus the Stabil has been doing it's job in protecting my fuel system. Do I have hard data? No, but it does seem to help as I have had no fuel delivery problems for at least 8 years.
