new pics (started assembly) 73 rs/clone

here are a few pics of my 73 911. i got it home yesterday from the bodyshop and started to assemble it tonight. put some new struts on and then lowered the 4wd down about 1 1/2" in the front. alot of you might not like the new style 18" wheels on a old car but i have both fuchs and these 18" wheels to sport around. the bumpers are going to be put on after i get the motor pulled and a 3.0 liter shoed back in. so i am leaving the front off to mount the oil cooler behind the rs cut-out in the bumper. looks like i need to space the rear wheels out about a inch to make it look correct and give me added clearence. if you are wonding what size they are they are 18x10 with a 265/35/ tire on them. who said a 10" wheel couldnt fit under sc flares! i have cleared the spring plate bolts by 1/4" and still need to move it out 3/4" more.plan on dropping the motor in a day or so to make room for the other one. hope you enjoy it as much as i do.....

I like it! Before I saw the pics I read the text (slow dial up), and thought, oh no not 18's. But I think they look good. Especially with the silver car.

The tub looks gorgeous -- like it just rolled out of a time capsule. Has the trim been blacked out?

And the wheels. Well, like you say, you've also got Fuchs.

I had 10-inch 2-piece Fuchs made to fit under SC flares with 275 tires. That may be something you want to look into. As it is, I'm not a fan of those wheels -- on either an old or a new 911.

But I love silver early cars. The factory never made a silver RS, but in my opinion they should have. And the wooden steering wheel you've got looks cool, there, in my opinion. What color interior are you planning?

jack, i have black interior for the car. the steering wheel may have to be changed in favor of something that matches the seats. i have a set of sparco seats and plan on putting rs door panels in it with rs carpet with rear seat delete. i know that most people hate 18" wheels on a older model car but i personally like the look. i just cant get into the look of fuchs( just to boaring) it would be different if the car was a valuable collectors peice and it needed to stay original. the car is a 73.5 with a 2.4cis so go figure. i plan on making this car the way i like it and who cares what everyone else thinks. this is what it looked like on the way home from atlanta in july

I think the color looks great. As far as the wheels go - you said it best "I like it". That's the most important thing. I'm actually painting my cookie cutters flat black for a bit different look.

You wouldn't still have the big front bumperettes would you My 73.5 T has incorrect early ones on it.

Hope you have a good winter getting it back together.

If you like 'em, that's what matters.

I personally like deco bumper trim on race cars. Most guys would probably not agree with me, but I've got my quirks, too.

Keep posting pictures as you go.

hockey fan, i do not have the bumperettes..i had new ones that came with the car but i put them on ebay 3 months ago as i was parting it out. jack, thank you for being kind and i am a car nut so i really like these cars in all forms. everyone has a stock car and i wanted mine to be different. the trim is going to be black. i have dropped my quarter windows off the work bench so i need a set to go in her. that is why they havent been installed yet. i know you would like to donate a set off black beauty 2 i bet! i plan on making the body looking period correct besides the duck tail. if i go to sell it and a person wants it a different way it will not be hard to change with what i have done to it. i would like to see the centers painted black on the wheels if someone is creative enough to do so. i havent made my mind up yet if the two silvers together clashes.

Lovely car but... (there's always a but)
I'm as big a fan of big wheels as anyone, but those 18"ers on that car make it look a rally 911, IMO (not sure if my car's sills are that far off the ground even when it's jacked up and the wheels are just off the ground!) - and hey, looking like a rally 911 is no bad thing, I love the looks of those cars. If that's the look you want, of course, then that's fine - as long as you like it.

eion, it is not at the ride height i want yet. i am planning on making the 3.0 liter swap and would like to see how far it drops before i lower the rear and the front any more. right now there is about 1 inch from the top of the tire to the fender. when i started out today it was about 3 inches. i just leveled it so it wouldnt look so bad. the picture does not show the top of the tire so it looks high but really it is quite low. the bumpers make it look high also by not being there.the glare off of the garage floor makes it look that way(rockers high)...not that i have explain myself to anyone , i just thought i would set the record straight. you cant slam a car with 8's in the front and run a 225 tire on it. anyone else running 8's on a factory 73 fender up front?

ride height

What kind of shocks and struts did you put on today? Was that Rancho you said? You setting it up for Rally? I heard you were changing it over to a Carrera 4 drivetrain and going offroading.

I run 8x10x17 wheels made with Fuchs centers, with 245 (or 225) front and 275 rear rubber. It all fits under stock SC/Carrera flares.

(Click for a bigger image.)

It's pretty low -- about 24.25 inches from front fender lip to the ground.

Ah, OK, fair enough. You can see it better than I can, after all.

I love silver 911's. Especially early ones. Run whichever wheel you want. The Fuchs when you feel "proper" and the big ones when you feel like bucking the system.
And where in Indiana are you? I wouldn't mind driving my RS wannabe over and having a look at that car.

paint code

well the color is off a mercedes....it is called bright silver metallic. i just went to the car lots looking for a color for the car and i had about three choices that i liked. after going back several times i decided on this one. mercedes is using it on almost every model they make so it wont be to hard to spot it. thrown hammer, well i live in evansville( about 6.5 hours away) i am going to try and do the meet next year in indiana. as you may know, i am getting kevin stewarts 3.0 liter after he removes it for the 3.6. i like the car you purchased, i bet it fly's. i was up your way to see kevin a couple weeks ago! 82sc, i have the wheels pictured on the car on the trailer. the picture was from where i was bringing my car home in july. i may part with the wheels because they need to be restored. they are 15x6 with early numbers on them.
