I can't see!

I'd like to replace the windshield on my '79 SC with original or close to original
as possible. What maker should I be looking for, & where can I source it?
I tried the Search button but didn't come up with the right info.
Thanks.

Years ago I replaced my windshield and I went to some length to get the original German glass. Shortly after a thread popped up with a bunch of people saying that the original glass was prone to pitting and that the cheaper, "softer" generic glass was more resistant to rock chips.

Not sure if that is still the case 15 years later but I suspect someone will chime in.

You may be able to find retro original Sekurit glass. That's what's on your's now, right?

Otherwise, Cigla, which is on later 911's. Local shops will have it or will be able to get it.

I don't know of any other providers.

PPG, now PGW also makes 911 glass. It is a tad narrow and takes some patience to fit but is decent quality.

I put a windshield in my 81 last fall.

All the local guys could get me was Chinese glass, even they did not recommend using it as it apparently doesn't fit properly.

I couldn't find PPG/PGW anywhere.

Pro-Source here on the board shipped me a German windshield for about 1/3 the cost from my dealer. I was very pleased.

I like the ones without the green sunshade band. Harder to find but looks like what originally came on the car.

2nd for Bruce at ProSource Glass here on the boards. Great price for my '87 targa windshield. I did a lot of research before choosing ProSource. My car is no where near concours but I realize choosing the right windscreen can affect value. Here is what I learned in bullet points.

-Although I didn't research all years but from what I can tell, most G-series cars have Sekurit brand door, side and rear glass. You can confirm on your own car.

-Most G-series came from the factory with a different brand windscreen-most common I found was Sigla

-There are a ton of little options that go into the original windscreen glass, for example my car came from the factory with green tint, green-not blue-upper shade band, antenna in the glass with a BLACK dot for the rearview mirror mount. These options were the overriding factors in choosing my windscreen and the only one that could guarantee I received all those options correctly was ProSource

-The dealer could not tell me who the manufacturer of their glass was, Sigla, Pilkington, Sekurit

-The dealer was 2 to 2.5 times more than ProSource and supposedly didn't even come with the little Porsche logo...more of a concern for concours,

-ProSource was able to talk to me directly re fit and fitment with their glass. As always, you hear plenty of horror stories of choosing the wrong part so rather than going with local dealer and/or Safelite for instance, I chose to pay to ship an exact spec matching windscreen from ProSource all the way across the country to my Porsche dealer approved glass installer.

-The manufacturer of my glass is the latest version of Sekurit called Saint Gobain Sekurit-current to all new P-cars and matches the door, side and rear glass on my targa although the script is not the same as is the color. Original to the car the script is white-new windscreen is black-big deal

-Use a Porsche only windscreen seal-lots of BTDT's with others and its just not worth it

-You WILL enjoy driving your car again as the difference is truly night and day. Some of the best money I ever spent on my car.

I hope my obsessive research and details help you and others make a decision on your glass source.
