'87 Carrera valve adjustment problem
This is my first attempt at doing a valve adjustment on my '87 Carrera. The A/C pulley will not allow me to get any kind of wrench onto the bolt in order to turn over the engine (see pics).
I also tried turning it over with a wrench on the alternator as shown in Wayne's book, but that only slips the belt. How do you turn over an engine with this A/C pulley? The width of the ruler in the second picture is not quite 3/4". Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Press in firmly on the right side of the belt, just below the top pulley, as you turn the top pulley clockwise.

I use a large pair of channel locks to turn the crank pulley.

I know that JW does not recommend removing the spark plugs during valve adjustment but ... I always do.

Use the wrench in the tool kit on the top pulley nut while pressing against the belt as John Walker suggests. Please do NOT use a crescent or other slip joint pliers.

If the above was not clear, you are squeezing the belt so it does not slip on the pulley while you are turning the engine with alternator pulley.

Guys, thank you all for your help. I am able to turn the crank by putting pressure on the belt while my son turns the alternator nut.

Left hand turns the nut, right presses the belt. One man job.

yelcab. removing the spark plugs you are asking for a wrong valve adjustment.Little carbon can fell on top the valve seat and it`ll screw your adjustment settings..bad idea..

Yeah, probably not the best practice. And there's no real need to remove plugs as the engine is easy to turn over with the plugs in.
