How do you test for bad speedo or bad cable
I have a 69-911...Both my speedo and odometer gauge recently quit working. I just opened and gained access to the gauge through the trunk.
How do you test or know if you have a bad gauge without opening it or you have a bad cable? Remember this is a mechanical (sleeve connection cable and not electronic). I want to test this out before anything major has to be done so we eliminate the basics before moving on. Much appreciated! Gordon PS..I searched the forum but alot of it deals with post 69 models |

When I took my speedo to be fixed, their stuck a short piece of speedo cable in the hole and spun it to see if they got a reading. Given that you probably don't have a section of speedo cable just lying around that's probably not that helpful.
However when my speedo cable actually broke, it came straight out of the cable sleeve when I disconnected the cable from the speedo. My cable broke in the section where it turns back towards the speedo itself, if yours has broken my understanding is that's the typical spot. |

Remove the cable from the speedo. Jack up the rear end of the car and put it in gear, and then have someone spin the tires, you should see the inside of the speedo cable turning
