What works so well is the contrast of Albert Blue against the chrome, especially the wheels. Very beautiful build.

I had an opportunity to drive this car last weekend and thought that I'd share some of my impressions.

Exterior:
The attention to detail on this car is fantastic - the photos don't do any justice to how great this car looks. The bright work and paint looked exceptional, and the light bucket extensions on the original Carrera fenders were seamless. Panel gaps and overall fit-and finish are fantastic. The aluminum "steel" wheels look even better in person. Since the original pictures, they've been painted a darker color on the inside and they look even better now.

Interior:
Again, the attention to detail on this really stands out. Here is where I could really tell that this car was built to Badwater's spec, as there is quite a bit of custom work. I loved the little backdate details like the early stalks. All of the materials were high quality and the whole thing fit together nicely.

Driving:
This is probably one of the tightest 911's that I've ever driven. The suspension is fairly aggressive, but it seems to work for this car. Unlike my car, it has no bushing squeaks over bumps (*sigh*). I wasn't sure that I believed him at first when he told me how much weight the car lost by stripping out the interior, new seats, and losing the impact bumpers; but driving it definitely reveals how light the car really is. It definitely drives far lighter than the half-dozen or so Carrera's that I've driven.

Anyway, I really love this car, and it's so much better in person than the pictures reveal. Thanks, Badwater, for letting me drive it. I now feel a need to re-evaluate my bank account and do some work on my own car...so thanks for that, too.

By far one of the classiest elegant backdates ever done. If I had the talent and resources I don't think I would have done anything different. First class!

Beautifully executed. I must say that those steelies are, IMO, the nicest aftermarket rims for a hot rod P-car. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers,
Johan

Wheels are 16 x 7 and 8. Tires are 205s and 225s. I think they're standard 16" Carrera sizes. We're still fooling around with different spacers/fender rolling to get the stance right, but we're getting closer.

Great looking build! Where in Colorado are you? I'm in Lafayette, and there's a Cars & Coffee the first Saturday of each month that happens here. Intersection of Arapahoe & 95th in Lafayette, in the South West corner. Next one is just over a week on 5/7.

You should bring her by.

I'm curious about the A/C. I removed mine for weight, because it was weak and because Colorado is so dry that it doesn't really need A/C.

Sorry I'm late to the party but I wanted to extend a THANK YOU to all the compliments, 'thumbs-up', and admirers. This was a great project and we're very proud of the end result. Feel free to direct any questions you may have about this build to me as well.

I'll add that as a bi-product of the backdates we've done, we'll be launching a steel short hood to long hood conversion exchange program in the next week or two. We've developed a process that extends factory steel short hoods to long hoods so that you don't need to backdate the front latch panel or buy a fiberglass long hood with short hood inner frame. This is all steel and looks VERY factory. We'll be building these in batches of 5 and the first group will be ready in about a week.

Thanks again for all the kind words guys!!

Marc

I'm definitely interested in one of these steel hoods, I would love to avoid replacing the slam panel. Will it be possible to buy one outright without exchange? I'd like to keep my stock hood, plus the shipping from Norway is a killer. Bad enough shipping one way and not two!

Can you show some pictures of the new hoods, also the inside frame?

Yes, pics are on their way later this week but in the meantime, here is a pic of the first hood we did, detailing one approach to the hood release.

Yes, these will be available as an outright purchase but an additional "core" fee will be charged when we cannot receive a good donor hood in exchange; typical core/exchange type of a program.

putting some effort into back seats and seatbelts. maybe my kids will ride in back sometimes, and maybe that will mean more drive time for me!

We had an order into Lakewell for several parts and added these to the order:
Rear 3-Point Seat Belts (Pair) Porsche 911 ’65-’93 | '74-'83 | 911 | Porsche | Lakewell

I have been experimenting with different ways to release the similar safety latch in my build but can't say that I have come up with the ideal solution. Is your design a pull cable and (brake line) tube design or is it a hard lever that is pushed sideways to release?

We've been modifying the safety hook by splicing in a section and lengthening it. You have to angle the splice correctly, so the hook engages the receiver properly.
With a 'glass hood it is a little tricky, but with Marc's steel hoods the longer safety hook shouldn't be a problem

Craig, I'll look for you at a future Lafayette C&C. I brought this car to the April C&C, but we were parked way out on the edges. That place fills up fast.

Glad to show you the A/C setup. I'm sure I'm over the top about cool air, but after several years of low speed commuting on summer afternoons, cars with poor or no a/c were starting to make me grouchy.

Put another way, the A/C will ensure that I have many more good drives in this car!

Fantastic build, every time I think about not backdating my SC I see one of these builds. Albert blue is a gorgeous “period” color.

They made plenty of post ‘74 G bodies, so few well done backdates to supplement the sought after (and rust prone) ‘69-‘73 chassis cars is fine.

I think well done backdates will always be sought after, but what really matters is that the owner is happy with their 911.

Sie da Flo - The rims were custom alloy versions of steelies, mentioned on page 2, Zurlinden LLC.
