trombone cooler
Trombone cooler
Hello everyone,i just bought 3 months ago an 82 911 SC that has the original trombone cooler.Does this cooler works for these cars?i am asking that question because my car seems to run before the last white line,but want to keep the car as original as possible.iv read in the owners manual of the car Porsche stating that no worries of temp until it dosent reach the red part of the gauge.the trombone gets real hot and the thermostat opens when just up the middle white line like 100 celsius,i would like to know the opinion of SC owners who still carry the trombone cooler and what to check and fix the pipes so they could cool a little bit more the engine.Well any advise will be appreciated but keep in mind i would like to keep the trombone cooler. I consider that when they built those cars they knew about outside temperatures and traffic. Best Regards |

It may help to let people know what kind of climate you are in? FL in the summer is different than Seattle in the summer.
Good info on the trombone getting hot, which means your thermostat is working, as you state. Any chance you can get a infrared thermometer to check the actual temp of the trombone?

i live in mexico city where the exterior tempo is now 28 celsius
yes i measured the temp on the trombone like 110 celsius thanks for your comments |

The trombone under performs in traffic and high ambient temperatures. There is a reason that Porsche went to a cooler with fan in later cars. Look at it this way - cost for a good oil cooler with fan setup = $600-$900 versus cost of engine rebuild from overheating = $10,000+. IMO do not let originality get in the way of keeping your engine safe.

You can be sure that in the 1980s, Porsche was not aware of the traffic on Viaducto Miguel Alemán in 2016...250°F won't make the motor explode, but it won't be as happy as when it's at 200°F.
If I were you, I would get a Carrera cooler and a strong fan that turns on with a relay at 210°F. Keep the trombone cooler for resale/originality. |

Our sponsor sells what is essentially a late Carrera oil cooling system from Elephant Racing, or you could go directly to them. Check out ER's website for all the info you'll ever need on oil cooling complete with the options for mounting these systems.
Might be difficult to import or ship to Mexico as I understand there are some challenges. Tom |

Suggest getting a more efficient fender mount oil cooler (factory or aftermarket) and the adapter/hoses to connect to the hard lines to/from the thermostat. An electric fan mounted on the cooler will help heat transfer when air flow is nil at low vehicle speeds.
While modern engine oils can protect parts at elevated temperatures, excessive operating temperatures can also cause engine parts to expand or grow beyond design and potentially decrease oil clearances to the point of metal-to- metal contact (scoring) or actual seizure. Sherwood |

thanks for all your replies.i has 2 options in mind ,the carrera cooler or otherwise the 28 tube brass cooler that was in the european SC,i have been reading that the 28 tube is more effficient for traffic cause it acts more like a diffuser and on the other side the Careera is great too but as it is a radiator needs more air to work well,i know that the 28 tube cooler is not that well known in the US but please give me your advise.
PD:Want to the simpliest way to go,porsche shops are not that common in Mexico that i know. |

also make sure the oil lines under the car are excessively dented or crushed. i dont have first hand experience with the 28 row cooler I went with a carrera style with fan because thats what was available. Either one is miles ahead of a trombone

If you can get a 28-tube cooler easily it is probably worth a try. I already have one so I'm planning to replace my trombone with that and see if it cools enough for me. Otherwise it seems that a Carrera-style cooler with a fan is probably better than the 28-tube. Mark

If you want to keep the car stock, don't drive it in the summer. Which sucks if you're the car.
If you want to drive year round, install a Carrera cooler with an electric fan and a thermoswitch that activates around 190* ( slightly before the thermostat opens). Keep the stock parts in a container and reinstall them when it goes to the next caretaker. /thread -Steve

just a question.is there someone in here leaving at high altitudes_cause i live at 6,000 feet and maybe thats why my motor goes hot,cause less oxygen.

PAG engineered their cars for climates in/around Europe. At the time, they didn't anticipate the variable temperatures in the US and other locales. If you want to maintain your car as equipped, without the benefit of later improvements, then you're subject to the operating conditions at your location. Just be aware of the conditions outside the car's comfort zone.

The trombone works very good, you also have thin air and low humidity which reduce heat transference. Slow traffic too. Are yo running 15w-50 oil? If your oil is thinner grade that might be part of your problem.
The trombone cooler is certainly not enough.
