Excessive engine noise on 73.5 911t

I'm getting my 73.5 911t up and running and the engine noise is very loud, pretty unbearable after a few minutes. I've added mass loaded vinyl sounded deadening to the floor and behind the rear seats, but the effect is negligible. I'm thinking the car must not have been this loud when new, and realized I am running headers instead of the stock heat exchangers (they didn't come with the car and I didn't want to put out big money for the heat exchangers just yet).
Would this cause excess noise?

The original muffler also had some peanuts in it, so I'm not sure if a critter has ruined it, is this likely? How can I tell if the muffler is do anything, without a frame of reference?

How loud is the interior when it is running right?

I'll start things off..although I know less than the majority of people in this community. I imagine people are going to ask you to qualify or characterize the sound in order to diagnose. As an owner of a 73.5T (and a Targa at that, since we are discussing cabin noise) without the sound/heat padding, I can tell you that I can have a conversation at speed in my car. Granted it is not like I am sitting in my living room or inside a Lexus, but I don't feel I have to yell at my passenger.

Heat exchangers and headers on old cars are basically the same in regards to sound. When you read your post it sounds as if you are referring to internals, if not then it sounds like a muffler issue. If its org then it could be rusted out.

As an owner of a 1973,5T with the 2.4 engine I can tell you that the sound deadening pad installed on the firewall behind the engine helps to reduce engine noise and easily carry on a conversation within the cabin. These pads (original was just foam rubber) can deteriorate from the engine heat over time. I strongly suggest you replace it with the reflective shielded type pad, which that is a big improvement. The 2.4 is no louder than any other Porsche air cooled engine! Headers?! I have no idea what could replace the exchangers with to add power. Although, since they are not stock those or a damaged muffler (broken or loose internal baffles or rust) could be the culprit.
