3.0 engine rebuild....first fire

Not my usual EFI/ITB hi-po engine build...but sometimes a stock CIS engine is a good thing.

I just completed the rebuild of this 1978 3.0 engine. Today was the first start/test/tune. Once i verified that I had oil pressure, spark and fuel...this engine started up immediately and ran well. After a few hours of testing and tuning...the rings are seated, the engine is tuned....and it runs strong.......

It is alive...............

I know...I know.......the fan belt is loose..............

PS: I have a 2.7S engine for sale...currently on Ebay...check it out

Good job, what is the build's retail cost?

rywats 04-08-2016 05:50 PM

What were the original problems and what all did you replace?

pmax 04-08-2016 09:08 PM

The idle sounds a tad high.

Well, thanks for the interest. While I really like to share the rebuild results and some of the technical details, i believe that the cost of this specific rebuild is only the business of the customer, so I would leave it up to them to provide that.

I do not provide a generic rebuild quote, typically, as the costs really do vary quite a bit, depending on engine condition and customer requirements.

However, I would be glad to provide you, or anyone else that is interested, with a quote for an engine rebuild, once we determine those requirements specific to your engine and plans.

al

Yes, idle was a tad high alright. This was a cold start.....once warmed up and run-in for a while, i set the reset the A/F mix and idle.

Thanks, it is a strong running engine. That is a stock 1978 3.0....................The exhaust is what I typically use on my test rig. Headers and a 2 in-1 out muffler.

al

Al, I would kill to have your skill set. I'm a computer programmer by trade, boring by comparison!

RSBob 04-10-2016 08:06 AM

Al you have more successful fires than a pyro at a match factory.

You have mad skills.

I'll tell you what....your computer science background/skill set is very much aligned with an area that is becoming needed more and more....tuning/programming aftermarket ECUs like Megasquirt, Motec, AEM, etc. While most folks can spool up on this stuff given the time and motivation, your background and understanding provides you with a running head-start. I build engines with EFI/ITB systems and use ECUs for fuel and ignition management. I typically tune these engines on my test stand, but they always are going to need fine tuning, once installed. I am currently building a website/webstore and one of the things I'd like to do is have a list of consultants, in various locations across the states, that are skilled EFI/ECU tuners I can refer people to.

al

If you are at the dinner on tuesday....we can discuss.

stf996 04-11-2016 08:40 AM

I guess so, Al. Ironically, in my non-professional life, I'm a bit of an analog guy. Go figure. Although I'm seriously into what you're doing, combining modern tech with our air cooled beasts...
