Let's see your non factory stereo systems!

I've got an old blaujunk from the early 90's in the dash and a sony power booster in the glovebox. Garbage.... Alpine 4x6's in the rear deck which are smoked and pair of polk separates in the doors. It sounds like hell and is all coming out next week.

I may or may not use that new porsche retro radio. Expensive bugger but it looks cool.
Not sure I can stomach $1200 for what is probably a sonically very average radio versus a brand new top of the line Alpine for under $300.

I'm curious to see what interesting creative ideas you've come up with to mount/hide amplifers/subwoofers. And I know I'm going to get a lot of "all I need is the engine music", but sometimes I really enjoy a good soundtrack while driving and I'm a bit of an audio nut.

So let's see what you fellow audiophiles have done.

Here's the new porsche radio.

You're right about the "engine is music" comments that may show up. But, if you have a well running engine, such as mine, you take your car on long trips and sometimes need some regular old rock & roll. It's mounted onto two aluminum angle/iron bars, between the seat mounts, so it sits about an inch off the floor allowing airflow and no issues with floor mats.

Here's my amp that I installed under the passenger seat:

Wow, there's a ton of room under there. More than I expected....

Did you add a subwoofer? What are you using for speakers front and rear?
And which head unit?

i went with a Blaupunkt 420 with Bluetooth. It has a card reader. i got the microphone for the phone too. I installed Pioneer D series (1330) in the doors. I replaced the back speakers, but dial them back. Here is picture of the head unit in post 58.

Just put in new JL something somthings. As far as I'm concerned you don't need a sub with these. They come in coaxial and non-coaxial.

Mine is a very rare head unit from Mcintosh
High-end sound, great period-correct aesthetics, amazing radio tuner, CD and pimped-up with an iSimple bluetooth interface to play your cellphone and to answer calls.
It is connected to a Mcintosh amp and speakers...but to be honest I very seldom use it. Best soundtrack is connected to the right foot.

Here's my setup:

- Kenwood KDC-X995 head unit
- Alpine PDX-5 Amp
- Hybrid Audio Legatia L6 mids
- Hybrid Audio Legatia L1v2 tweeters
- Hybrid Audio Legatia crossovers
- Bazooka passive sub
- PCAR mount for smartphone

Amp and crossovers mounted in front. The panel comes off by unscrewing 4 wing nuts.

Head unit has iPhone cable connected to the back and attaches to the PCAR mount.

Tweeter mounted underneath in the under dash panel I got from Moch-1.

Sub is behind the passenger seat and can be easily removed by undoing he straps and pulling the quick disconnects.

Is there room to expand the 4x6 in the rear deck to 6x9's?

Humdaddy 04-27-2016 08:42 AM

If you buy the app biz rear parcel shelf you can fit 6 x 9 , yes its worth it.

I don't think that the Porsche Classic system is available in the US yet. I'm all about it as soon as it becomes available (after someone else reviews it, of course ;) ).

I've got a Kenwood KDC-X998 in there right now. I kind of hate it, but it has a nice feature set. The display is unreadable under direct lighting, and the interface is terrible. I decided to plasti-dip (thread here) the face and trim ring to remove all of the chrome plastic accents, as well as the list of it's features listed on the shiny plastic (seriously, I bought the thing...I already know what it can do).

It's still ugly, but doesn't look as out of place as it did with all of the shiny plastic (here is a sequence of various iterations, from original to now):

I've been very satisfied with the sound I get from 6.5" separates up front and don't use rear speakers at all -- find that running treble from the rear speakers (i.e. running something other than subs back there) screws up the soundstage and doesn't really help the sound for me. I'm planning on deleting rear speakers altogether when I redo my interior.

deputydog95 04-27-2016 12:13 PM

Do 6.5's fit up there naturally, or did you have to open the factory speaker locations up some? For some reason I thought they were 5 1/4 from the factory.

'76 911S 3.0 04-27-2016 12:48 PM

I went with a Blaupunkt Cupertino 220 World...everything aftermarket nowadays does not fit with a classic interior. This was the best i could find for around $100.

Humdaddy 04-27-2016 12:49 PM

You can buy the app biz rear parcel shelf right here from pelican, aslo 6 1/2 will fit in door panel. I plan on painting bezels black but haven't got to it yet.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1461790172.jpg

deputydog95 04-28-2016 12:45 PM

Why do you need the app biz shelf to do 6x9's? What does it add that the factory shelf doesn't have to accommodate them?

This is the worst aspect in a Cab - even in moderate light, all the new units are unreadable as a result of the position - - are there any solutions ?

I think I may get this unit as well. The one in my car is terrible.
