G50 Clutch pressure plate question

Hey all,

I am going to get flamed for this, but I have to ask....

I'm doing a top end on my 3.2 and "while I'm in there" I'm knocking out a few other projects. Here's my dilemma... The clutch looks brand new. However, it is a rubber center disc with a 1997 date stamp on it.

While I don't want to keep the rubber center disc, is it possible to mix and match the pressure plate with a new spring type disc. This would help save a ton of money that can be spent on other stuff.

I've done this before with other setups, like a racing pressure plate with a standard disc, to make street driving more pleasant which is what I have in my 66 Mustang.

Thanks for the thoughts....

Jason

Yep you can ditch the rubber damper disc & put in a traditional spring damper disc. Works just fine with the standard pressure plate/clutch

Just remember, doing a partial clutch job may result in a less than perfect result, like a shudder. May be fine......

If you do a light hand deglazing of the surface it should help the break in so it works perfect.

Also, shop around for the clutch. I found a full Sachs brand kit with TOB, PP, disc for 675 if memory serves

Check with EBS Racing in NV. I recall they were having a clutch clearance offer not too long ago.

If you want to sell that rubber center part, let me know and put me in line. I'd like to have one on my shelf. I think KTL may have sold me the one I'm driving on currently.

Jesse,

Is the one I sold you causing you problems? I wouldn't have expected that because it came off of friend's a car with only a little mileage on the clutch before it was swapped out for a complete replacement 3.6 clutch & the engine to go with it. If that disc is going south on you, let me know and i'll send you some $ for your troubles.

Kevin

Not at all Kevin, I just put a lot of miles on my car and do lots of DE's so its only a matter of time on any clutch ! Clutch is working great ! Probably have 20+ DE events and 60k miles on that unit thing. I'm a big fan of having back-up wear parts available locally (my shelf).

OK cool. Just wanted to make sure I didn't skunk you with a faulty disc that was supposed to be like new.

Good on you for enjoying the car to its fullest. I tell people all the time they don't know what they're missing by not giving the car and themselves a workout at the track. It's what the car was born to do!

I did a "partial" on my '88 in '97. I replaced the rubber centered disk with a spring centered one and replaced the flywheel with a lightened one while doing the top end due to valve guide issues. It was great for many miles (70,000ish) and was in service until '09 when it needed to all be replaced again.
