I dont think they publish it since the 90s. I have tried to research how many 996s were built and could never find it.

I'm looking for really accurate info on this, each year is radically different, what they sold in 74 and 82 are number very far apart. Anyone know a resource for this question?

The "Porsche Data Book" by Bongers has this info and is a recent publication. I am happy to look up any models or years for you.
For Elombord this totals for 996 from the book (which are apparently thought to be accurate)
MY 1998-2001 31,135 coupe 23,598 cab
99-2001 Carrera 4 12643 and 9411 cab
99-2001 gt3 1868
2000-2002 turbo 11248
2001-2002 gt2 963
2002 carerra 6621 coupe 7254 cab
...the production numbers go from 1950 to 2002

The Automotive News industry publication has detailed sales numbers for all US car sales. Here is their website http://www.autonews.com/

I think that the "Porsche 911 Red Book" also has year by year production/import numbers in it. It's available at Amazon.

The book 'Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera - Last of the Evolution' by Tony Corlett has the numbers for 80's Carrera's IIRC.

I used to produce the Automotion catalog, and we put year-by-year production numbers in some of them in the mid-late 80s, as I recall. So that would be a good source for early production numbers, if you can find one. I'll look at my old copies. We referenced the production number table in the index, so it's not a huge challenge to find.

Porsche releases monthly sales figures for the US and Canada. Also, their annual reports detail model sales. The past couple of years it has been around 100,000; they differentiate between cars sold and cars made as well. Very good disclosure, and quite detailed (by market, model, etc.).

Porsche states 70% of all models ever built are still being driven. Is this because they are churning out more these days? Would be great to see the numbers!

That's because up until the last decade or so Porsche made (only) sports cars that people would tend to hold on to or even pass on to their children. That claim will drop quite a bit in another 20 years or so as Cayennes and Panameras head to the scrap yard. Fantastic vehicles as they may be, no one is going to shell out the money to keep those things on the road once they've outlived their worth.

Panorama has been publishing detailed sales figures every month, comparing them to the year previous. That's where you can get tidbits like in February 2016, they sold 1,328 Cayenne's, which is more than Boxster, Cayman, 911, and Panamera sales combined.
