Installing fiberglass engine "tin". Any tips?
I've gotten a set of amber fiberglass engine tin for my 1995 993 motor. A couple of questions:
1. Do I need to pull the engine to install, or can I do it in the car? 2. Any templates I need to follow, or suggestions on how to install? They don't typically come with too many instructions. The motor is my 1969, so I'm trying to make sure it's as clean as possible. Thanks! mto

You'll find you probably have to do some trimming and shaping to get it fitted well. I'd take one piece off the engine at a time and compare to your replacement fiberglass.

Some FG pieces are offered with no openings whatsoever. However, if the FG pieces are translucent, you can prefit, then mark the various hole centers with a marker. Use a Dremel and carbide cutting bit or equivalent to create openings to avoid cracking the material. Go slowly and methodically. You can't add removed material. Generally, start with the mounting holes and try to avoid putting the FG under stress. Since FG is flexible, bolt in as you go. Keep it aligned while you mark subsequent holes.
A little heat from a hair dryer can correct errant curves due to a worn out mold. With this one, I also had to enlarge the rivet holes for fit, then re-rivet. ![]() ![]() Sherwood |

Thank you for the tips. I'm hoping to get this installed this weekend. It looks like I'm going to have to do at least a partial engine drop to get to everything.
