Ground Straps

Where do these ground straps go? I have the strap to the alternator on, attached the strap to the transmission, rear deck and CDI. I just can't find in my notes where these two straps came from??? Putting the car back together after two years. Any help will be much appreciated!

Your best bet is to go through the electrical diagrams and check them all. I would call this standard procedure after 2 years of rebuild.

No need to do this - plenty of threads on this topic.

I did look through the electrical schematics. It shows ground but not specifically where on the car or if it is a strap.

I have located and connected ground straps on G1(deck lid), G3, G4, G8. Notice this diagram does not even list the alternator.

I don't believe there is a ground strap at G2, G5, G6, G7, and G9. Just ground wires.

Still have these two unaccounted for straps! Ahhhh! This is turning into a good mystery novel.

Hmm... Maybe added by a PO? Or around headlight bucket area?

We have a partially assembled 78 at work so I'll take a quick look tomorrow.

They look like the noise suppression straps for cars equipped with stereo. Since the factory supplied those in pairs it seems like a possibility.

Usually covered in a black plastic sleeve. They connect to the each side of the hinge mounting brackets on the firewall, then they wind through the hinge and connect to one of the mounting bolts to the decklid.

Jeff!!
You nailed it! I looked at all my pics from when I tore the car down and noticed the red over spray. I did a little research and indeed many of the 78's had two straps to the deck. Both of these straps have red over spray.

So, now I have a new problem! I thought the smaller (narrow) strap in the picture below was my deck strap. So, now the problem is, where does this strap go?

Bob! I'm asking myself the same question. My car had a tail on it and it looked like there may have been a rear wiper option. In that case, it may have needed the extra ground. I also see some threads that indicate the "abundance" of ground straps is for the issue of radio interference.

But my big issue now is, I have an extra ground strap in my hand that I don't know where it goes!

I think the radio ground straps were overkill. More to satisfy some DIN/TUV requirements than to satisfy any functional needs. The CDI box does put off some EMI though, so you just have to try it out and see what happens. And if you don't have a radio you definitely don't need them.

Sorry I can't help on the extra ground strap!

I think I'm going to start a new thread since there is a lot to look through to get to my new issue.

How the hell can these things help the radio? lol

I just removed my rear wiper and removed these thinking they were either for ground to the lid or to remove static from the wiper.

Now I don't know!

A ground for the License plate lights?
Do you have one of those straps between your alternator and the engine block? Behind the alternator.

The engine compartment fuse/relay panels have a ground strap, between the panel and car body, similar in size to the one on the far left of the picture.

I don't see that on my '86.
