Question 1970 911E build

Hello All.

After about 2 years of procrastinating I am starting on a project that I have been thinking of for a while. I purchased a 1970 911E about 9 months ago. It is in need of some attention, new floor, battery boxes, etc.... It was also transformed into an 80s SC/Carrera appearance many years ago. I am going to "backdate" it back to the original long hood appearance. It does not have the original power plant. A 3.0 currently sits in it.

I also have a 86 Carrera Cab that I purchased for the 3.2L and its running gear.
My first question is what suspension components can I transplant from the 86 to the 70?

This will be the first of many questions I will undoubtedly be asking....

Thanks

All of it. The rear lower shock mounts of the trailing arms just need to be trimmed shorter by 3/4" so the shocks don't rub in the upper tubes. The rear torsion bars are a bit stiff for the lighter body, but that's what I have in my '72 and it's tolerable.

awesome

Thats what I was hoping to hear. The 86 has many suspension upgrades and was looking forward to swapping suspension components. The 70 E will be a funny driver and occasional track car. Now that I embarked on this I look forward to the endeavor.

transplant

Worry not. The cab was already "assaulted" by somebody. When I picked it up it already had a 993 rear end and some kind of Gemballa slant nose front end on it.
It will be a win-win for both cars.

I finally had the time to pull the motor out of the 86 Cab. I ran into the inability to drop just the engine despite multiple attempts at different angles, it did not seem to want to let go of the transmission.... So I removed both the engine and tranny en bloc. Even with the units out of the car they still will not separate. The four bolts are removed and there is plenty of play between them.

What am I missing?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I know on the cars with a pull clutch you need to rotate the ears on the throwout bearing 90 degrees to get it to disengage from the fork. 86 would be G50 though, right?

you will need to go under the trans and remove the circlip that holds the clutch activation arm and the omega spring assembly- take starter off or look through bell housing window and see the throwout arm caught in the the throw out bearing- if the arm is stuck you may need to put the splined activation arm back on the shaft and spin it to help release the throw out bearing as you pull the trans off.

good luck

As John said you have to machine off 3/4 to 1" for it to fit correctly in shock tower. I took it down to the beginning of the threads than I'll add shims to get the correct angle. Mine are going under a 70T.

I recently tried to install aluminum arms on my 70 E and it did not work. The dampers kept rubbing, so back to stock

Sherwood Lee covered this issue many years ago in an article in Excellence that you can find linked on his website.

UpgradeAlloyControlArms

To do correctly aluminum control arms on 69-71 cars is a bigger hassle than it is worth, especially on a street car.
