Can anyone recommend a new head unit that looks like it's from the 1980's?
Hey Guys,
The head unit in my car is dead so I need to replace it. I would like something that looks like it's from the 1980's but has a USB port etc. Can anyone recommend something? I am having trouble finding anything? Thanks! Stewart

I just went thru this and found little. I ended up putting in a Pioneer that had as little electronic bling as possible. The Blaupunkts are still the cleanest looking but get bad reviews online. Porsche Classic offers a unit with Navigation that looks great but is expensive. Also, search on posts by PabloX. He put a European unit in recently and it looked very good in my opinion.

Take a look at the Kenwood head units. Many of theirs are too flashy and you can change the screen color. I set mine to the old amber style color scheme.
The problem is that a lot of the retro looking units aren't very good.

I went with this Pioneer DEH-80PRS in 3 of my cars, doesn't look 80s but rather minimalist and has B'tooth for phone, SD, USBx2, Zillion display colors etc :

You are Australian, nothing wrong with that but read this thread:
correct original radio for 911 Carrera 1988 EAch of the blaupunkts can be retrofitted for AUX input including USB. You can go cheap or expensive with a nice hook-up in your glove box..... Period looks, todays comfort You can also buy Porsche Classic 1 DIN Radio/GPS... Only 900€ ;o)

+1 German Keinlze, they also have VDO but blue numbers, and nice Continental with amber.

Try a Google search for "VDO Radio".
I can't say that I have ever seen one of these in real life (or if there is even a USA distributer), but I have always been intrigued by them. They are simple and look older with less chrome or flash than newer stereos. Also, a friend of mine put a "Pyle" brand stereo in his older VW mk1 Rabbit. It looks fairly original as well. VDO TR7311U-OR Car Stereo from Conrad.com Which After market stereo for my 964? The thread above is a few years old, but shows a VDO radio installed, and also provides a few other options people have considered.

This one on eBay looks a bit spendy and it may not have all the bells and whistles you want but it's pretty much period/brand correct:
I was lucky on eBay to find a Blaupunkt Frankfurt that works better than the modern one I took out and is almost period correct. Good luck, Tom |

Those VDO radios do have the correct 'period correct' look. Do they work with the USA's FM and AM frequencies.

I installed a black kenwood head unit in mine and it looks fine. Does all the stuff. And no one has ever said that it looks too new for my car. Now the old silver pioneer that was in there looked terrible and people would say it looked funny.

Don't forget about the (upcoming?) Porsche classic radio navigation unit -- Porsche Classic brings out new navigation radio for classic sports cars
looks to check all the OP's boxes. I've skipped the head unit altogether and run an old a/d/s power amp under my passenger seat -- it has a bluetooth interface feeding its rca inputs and lets me play from my iPhone wirelessly . . . |

Keep a look out for Porsche-badged Becker units like the CDR 21. Becker was high end optional extras in Porsche and Mercedes.

Yes I can! I think I really nailed it with the Nakamichi. I am super picky about this stuff and every time I see it I'm pleased. Only catch is that I had to buy it NOS from ebay. It does have aux in but not bluetooth etc.

I have a Retrosound Zuma - they are customizable to look OK. It's a good head unit - but not a great head unit.

I have a Porsche CR-220 in my '87. Manufactured by Becker. Also have an iPod connector that runs through the AUX.
This photo is of a CDR-220 (w/CD player), but looks identical to CR-220.
