Aren't they $100k cars once done? If so, that's why.

Yes they are. The downside is that you're going to spend $200,000 to restore the car. Then you get to sell it for $100,000. Now that is one incredible deal.

I have nothing against red, but painting over Irish Green?
![]() I could see that car being turned into a hot-rod, but no way would it be worth it to restore for a six-figure goal what with the wrong engine, etc etc. If it can be scooped up for sub $20k, I'd do it for a real long-hood hot rod versus backdating a later car.

It may cost you 200 to do a full resto, but not a shop that's in the business. They will have it on a rotisserie and stripped in a day, dipped, stripped and repaired in a week, sprayed and re-assembled in 2 more and on the block for 6 figures. A restoration shop has a parts room of bits 'n pieces and sources for the rest. Skilled labor at wage (not shop) rate and the experience to blow through it right the first time.
Not at all dis-similar to how contractors can flip houses for a profit, yet the public can't.

Reminds me of the old joke... how do you make a million dollars in the collector car business? Start with two million.

Have been watching this auction very closely. I have a 1969 Coupe with a very solid '71 2.2 engine. Mine has minimal rust isolated to passenger floor and that rocker panel. Needs that repaired, paint and interior....I'm always getting asked if it's for sale, but always say I'm going to get started on it....This gives me an idea of where I stand.
If this buyer can do metal work and paint himself, he can come out ahead in the long run.
