Made by hand

I don't remember seeing this here before, but...
Great old documentary on the production of the 356

Makes a really dramatic difference to the latest "made by robots" video!

No 50 yr old workers there I'll bet. Their bodies must be more used up than NFL players.

Carolina Coach Collection is not too far from my house. They are rebuilding 356's by hand. It's very impressive to watch. There was an older gentleman working there, probably doesn't hear so good anymore ;-).

No wonder they were expensive. It was a huge amount of manual work...

In a bankrupt country with lots of available skilled labor (i.e. 1950's Germany) it makes sense to adopt labor-intensive production methods. Today, not so much.

Very interesting. How cool would it be to recognize your car being built in that video?

I've got this on VHS. I should watch it again one rainy day. I love the technique used to lift the trans up into the car, I think it's called a knee/leg jack? :0

This was so awesome. The music is ridiculously distracting. It sounds like you're watching a '50s or '60s Disney movie. It's like, Gunter is using his body as a jack to hoist the rear suspension into place and there's all these flutes playing. I'm looking for Bambi to walk into the frame.
