Now that the engine is out..

I have a '76 911 with a '78 SC engine. While I was driving, my clutch pedal dropped half way to the floor. I inspected the cable and pedal - both of which were fine. My shop told me that the shift fork was likely the next culprit. I just dropped the engine and trans out of the car - now I've got a few questions:

1. How do I tell if the shift fork is bad? It's got a lot of play when I put it on the T/O bearing, so I'm guessing that it's worn...

2. Found gear oil on the throwout bearing. Not a lot, but a small puddle. Does a seal need to be replaced?

3. When reinstalling the shift fork, how do I know if it is aligned properly?

4. T/O bearing has a bit of play side to side and up/down (I have not heard any rattling with the clutch depressed). Is this normal?

5. Does the entire airbox assembly need to come off to replace the intake runner sleeves on the passenger side of the engine?

Thanks for any and all help. This is my first engine drop!

Inspect the fork for fracture/s if you have new one compare it.

Gear Lube, most likely the TOB inner seal is leaking, we usually replace the guide tube and seal as a set or something like that will happen.

Installing the fork is only one way with the pin, you will see it is obvious.

TOB, play is pretty normal, but if you are replacing the fork and thickness of the clutch, if worn close or past the limit, swap clutch, TOB and pressure plate. while you are there.

Stumped on the box.

If you have the engine out the airbox removal is cake. You should be able to just undo the runner bolts at the intakes and the airbox supports on the left and right rear, disconnect the throttle lever and cruise cable and lift the whole thing right off in one shot.

If the fork is bad on the TOB there will be a noticeable crack on the lower fork half. The lower one breaking has always been my experience.

It's not a shift fork it's a clutch release fork. Just so there's no confusion. The pin can be sheered off in the fork and shaft. You should remove the pressure plate and disc to inspect everything. Take photo's of everything and post them. Take photos of the fork from a few angles.
