Color advice needed on BBS RS wheel rebuild

Picked a decent set of 16x7/9 gold BBS RS this week. Lips were a little oxidized and the gold paint is flaking in spots.

Going to have my local wheel guy take them apart and refinish them to new like appearance.

Here's a photo of a car like mine with silver BBS. Looks meh. My car has the whale tail, black stone guards, and obviously the black accordion bumpers and associated trim etc. Interior on my car is can can red if that matters.

So I'm debating between the original gold centers with red bbs center caps or black centers with red bbs center caps.

I'm pretty sure they sold black rs wheels back in the day so I think it will still be period correct.

Fwiw, I'm putting more weight on good looks over period correctness :-)

Thoughts?

I like contrast when it comes to car colour vs. wheel colour. Black fits that bill while silver, not so much. I like gold on certain colours, but for me, it doesn't work as well with white.

BUT, I think with the RS wheels, the mesh is fine enough that the detail would be lost if you did go black. They'd just look like black holes within the fender openings. You might as well go with black Fuchs or just about anything else black.

So, in this case I think I'd stick to silver with polished lips or bright anodized, not raw or brushed aluminum. Again, a bit of contrast...

BBS gold would look great, classic combo. What about medium gray metallic?

I like the silver.

White would look good, but would be a bear to keep clean.

IIWM - - I would do Black centers or polished bright aluminum . . .

Gold only goes with a few car colors - IMHO of course . . .

This a pic of my son's Brown 78 911 race car with gold centers (not BBS) . . .

I did black centres also. All silver is too bling for me. All black is cool.

I don't know... Gold seems to go with just about any car color, other than gold of course. It's kind of like beige in your house.

I haven't seen a porsche with gold wheels that didn't look right. Well except for a grey one when I was googling "porsche 911 gold bbs wheels". The grey and gold looked a little odd together.

I don't like all silver either.. Got any pics of yours?

Here's random pics I found on the interweb. Gold seems to look good on all the colors, except for grey and beige. Not all RS wheels, but close.

Go gold or go home! Will look great and will be yours.

I think white is the ticket on a white car, though silver (maybe a darker silver than the lips) is still my #2 choice. I'm thinking of 964 Cups and some other of my favorite 911s that rock a white wheel on white body color.

As I mentioned in my thread, gold is painful on white cars, and I have nothing against gold because I exclusively put gold wheels on my black and other dark colored cars. The BBS satin gold is too close in the palette to white and is not complimentary in the least, to the point that I would respectfully wonder if those suggesting gold are color-challenged--don't be offended, because I was and partially still am as well! I'm no expert, but dating a design student/aesthete the past 7 years, I've learned to noticed a lot more aesthetic cues (many related to color) that work well or poorly.

Black washes out the RS spokes as Kevin mentioned above, even though black-centered Fuchs are still the prettiest wheel on a 911. Fuchs are much simpler in design.

I do think gold works on silver cars, but that's a different discussion.

And of course, YMMV. I know this thread is for ideas but when it comes down to it, the only opinion that matters is the owner's.

Here's a picture of just the wheel in black satin center, with polished rim...

I had the same dilemma. Went with silver and not looking back.

^ I've always wondered how much front camber you run, do you know? Those pictures from your thread were what convinced me I should go with the larger slant lips up front on my RS rebuild, they look awesome!

flat6_911 05-13-2016 01:27 PM

Thanks! im running 0 camber now but getting too much rubbing. Rolling the fenders next week and adjusting camber.

impactbumper 05-13-2016 01:33 PM

gold>silver>black

black does not show those wheels

Awesome, thanks for the follow-up! I'm at -2 camber and I think I'll clear no problem.
