Comment Request for my transmission oil drain plug
I have just changed the transmission oil of my 915 gear box (it's my first oil change).
According to my service book oil was 2 years old and car has covered 3500Kms. The car has 86.000 Km with a never split engine/transmission. I took some pictures (excuse for low quality) of the magnetic drain plug. Unfortunately I can't tell which transmission oil has been used in the previous oil change because my mechanic just wrote 80W90 without specifying make/model. I haven't find any big metallic parts anyway i'm concerned for the amount of crud (not truly metallic chips). Are all this deposits normal ? ![]() ![]() |

It does not look horrible, but it is not great. You will likely find that stuff is mostly super fine metal particles that makes a gray or black smudge if you wipe in on a while paper towel.
Just change the fluid again in 5 or 10K miles and see what is on it. And either the Kendall oil sold by Pelican is a great choice to use to refill.

Pretty normal. No chunks is good. Ever drop a tiny bit of iron powder/filings on a magnet and see them stand up tall? That wouldn't look like much if it weren't for the magnet.

Thank you for your kind reply.
I have already planned next oil change this winter. Someone told me that I can use some additive before changing the transmission oil. The suggested additive is commonly used (even if i 've never used it on any engine) to flush engines, it should be added to the motor oil, warm the engine and then drain oil as usual. As told I've never used those products on any engine (I think this products can be dangerous 'cause they can mobilize fouling and then block oil passages), nor read anyone here using on Porsche engine or transmissions. so, concluding it's ok to simply change oil after a 30 mins of hard driving or do you suggest any additives treatment? |
