Remove the heat exchanger and you will see the issues. On the rear tube close to the flange their is a tab that connects the shell to the tube, it often breakers. The area where the three small tubes enter the shell is often rusted and loose.

I just weld them up with my MIG [wirefeed welder] welder. You usually don'y have to take them off. I have been patching the heat exchangers on my 1973 for 17 years.

If you don't weld maybe you have a friend that can do it.

As long as the inner headers are sound you can patch up the outer housing and brackets etc..

Sure you can replace them, but stainless is the way to go but $$$ and you may have some frozen studs to deal with.

I have just had good success with repairing them. I am not in the rust belt so I don't have to deal with any corrosion.

Post a pic. Where in Socal are you? Maybe one of us Socali's can take a look???

One of mine were loose do to a scuff from PO driving over something. I used JB Weld and aluminum foil. It held together for over 4 years. Buddy donated one of his old good ones, swapped it out. I think I will take a my flux welder to the old one and fix it right .
