Oil temp 1982 porsche sc

Hi,wanted to ask a question,my oil temp gauge when starting the car is in the lower part but i have seen after some days)its a new car for me)that the needle goes until the third white line and then the oil level starts to go up until 3/4.is it normal?
Thanks for your comments

What's the ambient temperature? Do you have the stock trombone cooler?

its about 80 farenheit 26 celsius,i live in a city at almmost 8000 feet, and have some traffic sometimes,i have the trombone cooler and its hot when touching it,the needle goes int to the last white line but never goes upper that that, and the is the time when i see the oil level going up,no problem with oil pressure so far 1 bar each 1000 rpm.
thanks for your comments

Does it stay at the 3rd white line while cruising?

If everything is stock it may be time to upgrade to a a mocal or setrab oil cooler in the front fender in place of the trombone.

I replaced my trombone cooler with a used Carerra cooler, and adjusted my timing, and my overheating problems went away.

I don't think you want your temperature near that top white line for any length of time - too hot for good engine life. The consensus seems to be the trombone is undersized for most warm climates. Recommend replacing it if you're driving at 110mph on a regular basis.

Can you provide a picture of your oil temp gauge? Normal engine temps should be around 210-220 for oil when warm.

Also, have you replaced your suspension components? Driving 110mph on older components for a length of time is a risk that I personally would not make me comfortable. It's not so much the what will happen as when, and you cannot account for other variables out of your control. People driving around you are careless and don't understand the value of your car. Plus, it's only going up in value of its in good shape. Just sage advice I wanted to pass along!

At 70 mph for a lengthy period my '83 SC it will sit below or on the 2nd white line in 90 degree plus ambient.
I've a Carrera oil cooler and block off in the wing.

Another thing to check... It's challenging to get to, but time to see if maybe there's debris blocking the oil cooler under the fan shroud. Possibly some furry friends set up a nest, or debris has built up over time.

And an actual oil cooler in the front.

I'd try something if that is consistent...the white line below your indicator is 248 degree's so you are at about 260 degree's. That is a tad out of oils happy zone.

Get a hand held IR Pyrometer. Check the oil line temp and compare it to the gauge. Your gauge may be bad or the sensor isn't matched to the gauge.

I agree with Joe Bob here. That seems a wee bit too high. You may want to follow Joe Bob's advice and also consider getting a gauge that is more accurate and provides you with physical numbers for extra insurance beyond better operation.

Do check oil line temp with IR pyrometer. If the temps are really as indicated by your
gauge (approx 250 deg+) that's WAY TOO HOT for normal operation. Your engine longevity will be sorely compromised!
You need to do some serious trouble shooting to find out the cause i.e ignition timing,
air flow thru engine, oil cooler air blockage. Could be a combination of things, but don't
just live with it!

You might also check to see if your oil lines leading to the front cooler are crushed [improper jacking], which could limit the effectiveness of the front cooler. Your thermo could also be sticking part way closed, which could also restrict the oil flow to the cooler.

Where are you located? I'm trying to figure out where you could drive for a half hour at 110 mph, at 8,000 feet elevation, at 80 degrees.

I bought one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/HDE-Non-Contact-Infrared-Temperature-Thermometer/dp/B002YE3FS4/ref=sr_1_1?rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1458078948&sr=8-1&keywords=ir+pyrometer&refinements=p_85%3A2470955011

to make sure the oil temp is reading right. Less than $20.

Here's a thread on this issue with a pic. How high is the oil temperature needle acceptable?

If your gauge is accurate you are at the "Too Hot!" level. My needle never goes above 1/2 way up, even stop and go on the hottest days.
