Better engine swap into 1977 Porsche 911S?

What engine would be the better or more easy swap into a 1977 Porsche 911S? I am looking at either 3.0 or 3.2 engines....or would a 3.6 fit as well?

I am new to Porsche engines and am wondering which would be more easy to maintain and work on as well.

What about carbs or fuel injected? Which would be better for someone not familiar with Porsche engines in general.

They will all fit. The 3.0 is almost a direct drop in. The 3.2 needs some wiring work and the computer - or you could switch to carbs. The 3.6 is a fantastic upgrade, but expensive and lots of work. There are many many threads on this if you do a search.

Your best bet in my opinion is to swap in a 3.2 with it's computer. I did it and it woke my car up. Fuel injection is fabulous - always starts right up and runs great. Used engines are getting high in mileage these days though.

Very true -- probably best to factor in the cost of (at least) a top end rebuild of the donor engine if its status is not known. The integrity of the bottom end can be assessed during the top end rebuild and addressed if/as necessary.

This potentially adds $$$$ to the swap, but better to have a known good from the getgo . . .

I recently went through this same exercise with my '75 and ultimately decided on upgrading to a 3.0 motor. I was between the 3.0 and 3.2 motor and figured the extra complexity of the 3.2 was offset by the additional power and my personal preference of motronic over CIS.

However in the end it came down to what I could find. I ended up finding a nice 3.0 with a low-mileage rebuild within my budget. I think Bruce Anderson's adage applied as I bought the newest, best condition motor I could find within my budget.

I recently purchased a rebuilt 3.2 from Bruce (flat6pac) for my 1975 wide body. It was a tough decision between the 3.0 and his 3.2. He still has the 3.0 for sale. If funds allow, obviously buying his rebuilt 3.0 for 11k, seems more prudent then say 8k for an 80k Mile motor. I'm surprised no one has purchased his 3.0 yet. He's got a thread on here about the build, I believe it's something like "home alone with 3.0". Tim
