New VR. Still 14.9V at Idle. WTF??
I was putting out too much voltage to my battery, so I replaced the voltage regulator. Yet I am now still putting out 14.9 volts terminal to terminal at idle.
Do I need a new alternator? Am I missing some other check? I am clueless on this(amongst many other things). |
Do you have a chargeing light on? A bad diode in the alternator can cause over voltage.
|
What happens to the voltage when you start driving the car (and increase engine revs)?
|
I will check at different rev ranges. I was by myself, so was unable to check the range.
No light on the dash. WIth a bad diode, could it still overcharge, even with a new voltage regulator? |
Yes. I had a glowing charging light with over voltage on my 73 Targa. Replaced voltage regulator, with no change. I then pulled alternator and found a bad diode. After diode replacement all functions returned to normal.
