Floorpan Painting Advice Needed

Hi guys

One of the many jobs I am currently doing relates to upgrading the interior. The floor pan is pretty rust free but the PO seems to have used some black paint on the floor that seems to still be quite soft. I'm not sure whether it was rust proofing paint that didn't quite go off properly.

The original sound deadener seems to have been removed and the current paint comes off with a heat gun and with use of some all purpose thinners (see pic). The original primer is still underneath in some cases. Just wondering whether I should persevere with removing the paint and if so what should I repaint with ?.... Or should I just leave it and only spot repair the sections where surface rust has formed ?

Cheers Daren

I'm in an identical situation. Been using Goof Off to remove glue. I do have some rust areas in the floor and wondering the same thing. Is it better to spot-repair or take the whole interior down to metal and repaint?

If it were me I'd take it down to metal and repaint. I've also fallen down the "while you're in there" slope many times.

Hi guys

In the end I've decided to remove all loose paint and adhesive with a wire brush on a drill plus using Goo Off to remove adhesive. Its messy, and time consuming. I'll post some pics on progress when I get a chance.

I did this on an old Rabbit Convertible many years back. The tar on the floors did not come up easily so I ended up doing the wire brush and aircraft stripper method. Be careful for shooting wires off the wheel and make sure it's well ventilated.

After stripping I brushed on some POR15. At the very least I should have sprayed it like the above picture.

Hi Guys

I'm still busily scraping away tar based paint and getting the floor pan ready for painting on my 74 Targa. In the passenger footwell there is a throttle lever mechanism which links the throttle lever rod to the rod going to the accelerator pedal. I am not sure how to remove it and disconnect the spring as shown in the pic ?. As I remove the bolts the piece wants to rotate. Has anyone done this before ?

Cheers Daren

did you see the post about using dry ice to get the sound deadening stuff off?

I am just getting started ....

tried a couple other kinds of wheels, but this one is nasty.

what you see took 10 sec...
