Bearing retainer plate necessary?
So I pressed in new rear wheel bearings, installed the hubs, rotors, calipers and axles...went to the workbench to clean up and noticed I forgot these...
![]() Now, I know its the factory thing to install these, just like they put dust shields which arent necessary or replaced with something more usefful like ducts. As I am trying to cut every ounce especially of unsprung weight plus it will save me an hour of disassembling and reassembling both sides, are these really necessary? THis is on an autocross car, so highly maintenanced and dry weather only. It doesnt seem like the bearings can really go anywhere, they really get pressed in there and the axle is keeping it all together. Is it foolish to leave these off or is this another of those quietly acceptable cheats, like spacers under the engine mounts?

Do it right. You may need new bearings again if the inner race comes out with the drive flange.

I just did this job, and forgot the plate on one side. The inner race stuck to the axle flange, so I ended up having to replace that bearing.
What's this about spacers under the engine mounts??

Rumor is some folks stack washers between the engine support and the bottom of the engine mounts to lower the COG...

Not only disassembly and reassembly you'll need two new bearings.
