Juan,
I'd love to give ya some help , but i am not quite sure what ya mean "more attractive".. what are ya looking for .. do you mean better back ground or simply the car itself?

Naked Latina women draped all over the car perhaps?

Try to shoot when the sky is overcast. Soft light will do a lot to bring out the detail in your subject. Harsh shadow lines always detract. Compose you shot so that your viewfinder is filled by your car so there is less to crop. Drive out to a scenic spot.

I would suggest going back and doing a search on some of Jack Olsen's pics and threads regarding this topic. He has some great shots of his car and I believe, in at least one of the threads, he gives advice on how to achieve excellent results when taking photos of your car.

Hey Juan -
My dad-in-law is a photographer. I'm not so interested in magazine quality shots, but here is what he has told me: keep the sun to your back. If the sun is out you must analize all the shadowing. Slight overcast is good. Background - your car is the focus so use plain background. One of the best shots I have is of my last 911, a 73T widebody. The background is an old gey brick building. If I can find that picture I'll post it (I have a scanner now - yipeeee!).

Late or early in the day when the sun is low. Just like the pros do when they photograph swimsuit models

I park the car in the setting then use the evening light to set the "mood", then I walk around the car looking through the lense with different amounts of zoom. I then find views of the car that pick up it's beautiful lines and then take the photos with the camera on a tripod. If you are wanting to get some nice prints other than just for on the internet, I recommend you use slide film. The colors are much more lush.
Just an amateur, but an ok amateur Bill.

I think someone else metioned it already, but photos of cars for brochures or magazine ads are almost always done as the sun is rising or setting. That brings out the color and displays it best without bold shadows or bright glare. And always have the sun behind you. In keeping the sun behind you, be sure not to photograph your own shadow. Keep your background fairly simple. And...oh yes...everyone likes Latina ladies don't they?

Another thing that I don't think was mentioned is use a contrasting color background. Your car is a little darker so use a lighter background. The trees behind you in the pic are dark so the car doesn't show up to well.
The pic is also backlit which is what you don't want.

Try not to have trees and telephone poles "growing" out of the bodywork (background)!

Take a look at this article:
http://www.playingmantis.com/jl/news_details.php?articleid=550 Also notice that they ARE looking for a Porsche 911 and 911 Turbo 1975-1988 (coupes only, with or without whale-tail wing, no targas or convertibles)

This is from my days of Photo Journalism Class.
Use the "2/3rd Rule". Frame your shot so that it is deivided into thirds. For example, a shot with the horizon should have the horizon line at 2/3rd from the bottom or top depending on what's in the shot. Subjects should appear to be entering the frame, not existing the frame. Use a bit of foreground objects if available to give your shot depth. Use aperture settings for depth or to to draw attention to your subject. Contrast is good, but don't make the shot too busy. Lower light gives more light and dark contrast, but if you are after color, more is better. Color does not always make the shot interesting. And for your car, a shot as you included in the post (profile) is not pleasiong unless you intend the shot to be a profile shot. Shoot from the quarters of the car (or at the very least, not straight on to any perspective) and you'll give the shot some depth. Lowering your position relative to the car will give it a larger presence. Turn your front wheel into the picture slightly (you've seen pictures when folks turn the wheel away from the shot and it looks like the car is tripping over it's front wheel...not very flattering). A fisheye lense can make an interesting shot. Software can make the shot more interesting. |
