Been thinking about building an E or F class Porsche for PCA racing. Looking for advice & opinions. (Read as what car will help make up for the slack driver).
The F class Carreras 84-86 seems like a great option. They seem to do very well in class A G50 Carrera or a 964 C2 would be fun for E class, but more data is needed. The C2 have more HP, but weigh about 300 more lbs. Trying to determine what would make the 'best' platform to start the project. Here is a list of F class options Class Year Model Weight HP Ratio (lb./hp.) I hate to say it, but the 944s are the best bang for the buck in those classes.

Except that the 944's don't consistently dominate the class like the 911s do. WGI '03: 7 out of top 10 F-Class 911s (Many SCs running prepared). Lime Rock '03: 5 out of top 10 were 911s.
The 964 used to dominate F, then they moved it to E. Jim, are you thinking of building one? The reason I say this is that you will spend $35,000 over the price of a Carrera to build one, and you can probably buy one for around that with a history of podium finishes. If you have a clean sheet of paper, I would ask yourself what fits best with your experience, e.g., what kind of car did you drive when you were working on getting your racing license? What do you know how to work on best? At the end of the day, what's available in the class and what is its condition and history?

I would opt for Boxsters in both classes if finances allowed.
If not - 944 Turbo/Turbo S YMMV

Wow!
"The reason I say this is that you will spend $35,000 over the price of a Carrera to build one, and you can probably buy one for around that with a history of podium finishes. " I'd part with my fairly fast F class 911SC Euro for quite a bit less the 35gr so I definitely agree it is cheaper to buy a winning car. The problem is that ready to race stock class cars don't seem to change hands all that often. Jess Wurmbrand 101 stock F |

Thanks for the advice. Currently, I am trying to get my race license. I have done a bunch of DE's in a 3.2 914-6. I would love to race the 914, but I am in GT3 class with the car, and the cubic dollars to be competitive is way more than I have ($1800 for a set of tires [12x16 and 10.5x16] etc). I am thinking about selling the 914 and purchasing an E or F class car to build and then race.
The 964 seems like a great platform to start a project as well as the Carreras. There is another catch, my wife will be driving the car in DE's also. So I need something that shifts well. The 914 is not exactly the most easiest car to shift. The G50 gear box is 'easier' to shift than a 915 gear box. I am curious of how the extra weight in a 964 vs. a Carrera G50 car compare. It is good to hear that the 911s are doing well in class. It may be cheaper to buy a race prepared car, but half the fun is building the project. I have to justify having a garage and tools somehow. ![]() |

Jim, you could pull the 3.2 out and build a 2.2 and run GT5 with your 914.

Don,
That is a good idea is to replace the 3.2 with a 2.2 liter motor. However, tires would still be $$$. The flares on the 914 allow for 16x12" wide wheels in the front and 16x15" in the back. With the flares and tire width adding to wind resistance, I am not sure that in a GT5 class the 2.2 would have enough HP to be competitive. Last edited by Jim Smolka; 07-01-2003 at 08:07 AM.. |

You can buy “Scuffed” slicks for $40-$90 per tire in those sizes either Hoosiers or Goodyear’s.

How much power should typical 3 liter E class be making to the wheels?
