Made a mistake on mileage when I transferred my title. Is this a big deal?

Today I transferred my title and registration from NY to NJ. On the form I accidentally entered the mileage as 129,xxx when the actual mileage is 127,xxx. Is this going to cause all kinds of problems when I try to correct it?

Do you drive the car? When is your state inspection?

I do drive it but it will take me a while to put 2K miles on it. I have to get it inspected in the next few weeks.

I'd just tell the state inspector when inspected. I'd think they'd be more concerned if it were reversed.

Well 129k is printed on my new title and recorded electronically. When I go to get it inspected it will look like it was reversed.

Believe nvr2mny's point was that underreporting mileage (saying your car has less mileage than it actually has and is therefore potentially more valuable) will be much more likely to "raise a red flag" than overreporting mileage.

This caused a huge issue for me when we sold my wifes car. Long story short, she was way off when she filled out the form for the title. We sold the car a few years later after not driving it too much, and didn't even notice the milage on the title was still more than the odometer (only like 100 miles). I got an official call from a lawyer demanding we buy back the car as the state would not issue title to the new owner. No big deal but I was a bit embarrassed and I think the buyer thought we were shady, when our crime was carelessness

Anyways it wasn't a huge problem to correct at the dmv. Just needed to fill out a form. I think you will end up with a milage discrepancy on your title report if you don't take care of it asap

When you get it inspected it might show as a rollback on carfax. Bring it to a private garage and see if they will help you out, don't bring it to state inspection station.

Do you think its a better idea to try to correct it with the DMV and get another title or go the private garage route and have them enter 129,010?

Such a headache but I guess it could be worse.

NJ DMV? They are likey to record it as a rollback or mileage unknown if you ask to change it.

I'd go on a road trip and put the miles on before getting it inspected.

Bite the bullet and go back to the dmv. It was a 4 hour mistake.

+1 on road trip. You don't want a discrepancy title or mileage not true. Might hurt resale.

NJ DMV? I'd be suprised if they fix without scarring the title.

They wouldn't register my boat trailer because the prior owner's reg had some water damage (couldn't read a few digits) and the trailer VIN was a sticker, not stamped in the frame. Even though I had a bill of sale. Clerk actually told me to register it as homemade!

What year is the car? if it's more than 25 YO no inspection with qq plates.

Private guys might help, but I think most of them might feel they have the most to lose if found out. Too bad you can't take a trip someplace like Atlanta via the Blue Ridge parkway & Skyline drive hint hint.

or drive it more and delay inspection as loong as you can.

State of New Jersey - Motor Vehicle Commission

The following vehicles are exempt from inspection requirements (N.J.A.C. 13:20-7.2):

Gasoline powered vehicles registered passenger, model year 1995 & older with a GVWR 8,500 pounds or less.
......

State of New Jersey - Motor Vehicle Commission
You may want to check into this, it seems to be a new rule?? I never saw it before, you might not need inspection.

If it's true, I'd carry a copy of the code, police will likely pull you over for no sticker, without QQ plates.

DMV gave you a 'pink card' and two weeks for inspection?

Yes they gave me a pink slip.

I called the DMV and they confirmed the exemption. He said they are supposed to mail me a letter confirming the car is exempt and there is nothing to display on the window.

Thank you all for your input!
