rear light wiring help (1984 911)

so after getting my fiberglass rear bumpers on, someone pointed out to me that my night time running lights do not work. It is possible they have never worked since I got the car in 2014. Who knows.

Brake lights are fine, and the passenger side reverse light is stuck on when the lights are turned on (drivers side dead). All bulbs test fine (well, one had the glass twisted from the base). Turn signal lights also work fine.

Here are some photos:

This has been opened before.

Spider senses say not oem...

from the drivers side. Not attached to anything. Any idea where these go? Did the oem lights on the rear bumper rubber get lit?

passengers side. No idea where these go.

I cleaned and snugged up both grounds on both sides to no benefit. Maybe I need to do a better job.

Thoughts appreciated. I will see what I can dig up.

I think the unattached blind connectors on each side must be fore the license plate lights.... I will try wiring them up. EDIT: yup, they now work.

So allis good in this world minus the night time rear lights, and the reverse lights. And those two mystery cut wires.

I will do that, but the reverse light on when the lights are turned on makes me think something is off..that and the two cut wires on the drivers side, and the taped wire on the drivers side.

Not to hijack your thread, but did you have any problems removing the taillight housing? I bought some new taillight lens seals but when I tried to remove the housings to install the seals I found that the captured nuts behind the housings are turning. Some I can get to from underneath the car, but one on the passenger side seems to be blocked by the oil tank.

I had no issues with removal. A nice change from typical mess that follows my car with every part I touch. Is one square inch of my car not a mess from a PO?

Getting there i think.

Here is what they should look like:

Here is what mine looked like. Note the taped off red/grey wire on the left side (should connect to brake light), and someone using a large brown wire to link my right side brake light to the left side brake light (presumably in place of the grey/red wire).

Left

Right - grey brown and grey/red wires are reversed. Thus why my passenger reverse light was always on when my lights were on.

And i think this is everything corrected. Need a friend to test brake lights. Night time light left side socket not functioning.

Left

Right - thick rogue brown wire not connected. No idea why it runs between the left and right fixtures... Other than it being a hack job.

So everything is working with the exception of the reverse lights, and the small drivers side might time light. I can live with that for now.

Edit: minus the reverse lights, everything is now 100%. All is good. I sealed the back fixture covers with marine clear also. I do note that new rubber seals would not be a bad idea... Mine are ok, but not great.
