If you drive up to Malibu swing by Malibu Kitchen Country Mart in the morning. You'll probably run into Spike Feresten, Seinfeld and friends having breakfast. They drive amazing cars.

Odd that no one has mentioned the La Brea Tar Pits. I've always found the tar pits fascinating and they are right in the middle of town. It's a geological anomaly in the middle of the second largest city in the US.

True! I second this recommendation. Strange when you drive into that area. It's throwback LA with oil pumps churning away. That's what I love about LA. It's hundreds of small towns running into each other with their own attractions and unique culture.

You are welcome to visit me and get first hand on how to adjust your valves if my engine is still out of course :D

I hope not but as DRC should be done with my rockers

See if there is anything going on at Willow Springs.

If so, take your rental car align Angelas Crest highway. IF you have never been out that way into that kind of landscape, its interesting going through a canyon and also going out to the high desert, plus, the road there is a lot of fun. (I suppose you could keep going and take in vegas...)

Excited about my trip starting this weekend. Rental car booked. Coming in on Saturday night so I can catch the Dana Point event on Sunday morning.

I'm free all day Friday and Saturday July 29-30. I changed my flight to fly out of LAX since there seems to be more to do on that side of town than Anaheim.

Petersen is on my list and probably stop by the Tar Pits... Looking forward to a bit of HWY 1 driving, but I wish it was in my Porsche and not a rental.

Thanks for all the great suggestions so far!

Is it worth it to pay the extra $20 admission at Petersen to see "The Vault"?

javadog 07-21-2016 07:37 AM

I would. They have some very interesting cars and there may be some you'll never see in person again.

If you go to the tar pits, stop next door at the art museum.

Hang out at any hotel swimming pool in LA , that's never boring and/or go to the beach at Santa Monica or Venice. Visit someone who lives in the hills. I always miss my Porsche when I am there driving a crappy rental car. One time I borrowed my pals '69 Cadillac, it made a lot of sense, actually.

La...

-The Petersen (and pay the extra to see the Vault!)
-The Broad (awesome and free)
-The Getty/Mulholland Drive

Now on to the important Foodie stuff...

-Fishing with Dynamite in Manhattan Beach for Brunch/Lunch or Dinner
-Genwa on Wilshire (and only if you have at least 3 other people with you!)
-Gjusta for breakfast/lunch in Venice

Good luck and enjoy.

Dana Point show did not disappoint. Beautiful weather with hundreds of great cars. Mostly 356s, but many 911s to gawk at. Just a few of my favs...

Just occurred to me that no one has mentioned the Nethercutt Museum in Sylmar. It is the most jaw dropping collection of cars I have ever seen. JB Nethercutt is the only person to have won the Pebble Beach Concour 6 times and the cars are incredible.
There are two buildings and all the cars on display are in operating condition. One building can only be toured by groups but the much bigger building is open all the time and it is free!

Randy Ema is just down the street in Orange, just west of Chapman College. Get to know him, and that could get you into Leno's place...

Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions. LA is a car lover's dream. So much to do, so little time...

Did you know there is car museum that let's you ride in their cars?! It's minutes from LAX so why not? Come Ride With Us - Automobile Driving Museum
Only one Porsche, but how about a ride in an '89 Speedster?

Got to stop by the folks at Pelican Parts. What a wonderful group of people. Really enjoyed visiting.

And the Petersen is incredible. Porsche racing cars? Yes, please.

I spent 5 hours there and probably could have stayed more. The Vault tour is a must do, but I have no pics as they had a strict policy policed by the docent and the security guard walking behind the group. Maybe they've seen Gone in 60 Seconds too often? They had a 1955 356 "Continental". I had no idea Max Hoffman convinced Porsche they should have a name and not "356" on their cars in America. Why would you choose Continental when of course Ford would object? Fascinating.

Also had a 1964(?) preproduction 901 and the first year production '65? 911 right next to it.

Briefly stopped by the Tar Pits too. I enjoyed it. No need for all day, but 2 hours to see it all.

I rolled by Randy Ema's shop in Orange, but it was locked up tight and no one answered...

Next time I'll map out more time to visit more of the dozens of independent shops. Again, thanks for all the great ideas.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1470085590.jpg

Marconi automotive museum in the OC. Fantastic! Almost all Ferrari. Only $5 last time I was there! Google it! Amazing!

Those Porsches in the Petersen belong to a Charlie Nearberg....a great guy.
