help removing optima battery 911sc
My old Optima red battery recently died on my 911 sc ('81) and I am replacing with a new one. The battery is attached to an Optima battery mounting tray. I removed the front 2 nuts but it appears that someone attached to rear nut (s), The space is so tight i am at a loss as how to see it let alone remove it (them). Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Generally the optima battery trays are designed so that you remove the battery and tray together, then unbolt the battery from the tray.
There should be a bolt on the inboard end of the tray, and the outboard end should be held down by an angled bracket built in to the pan. Just remove the one bolt and the tray should lift out of the trunk.

Suggest you remove screw (bolt) on clip at front of carrier
Pls see the the red arrow in my markup of one of your photos. The arrow points to a screw which tightens a Z shaped (looking on-edge view) clamp which normally pulls down on a cleat on the front of the battery edge about 3/8" above the bottom of the battery. In your case, the clamp fit overs the aluminum plate to which your battery is attached. In either case, the screw and clamp pull down on the front of the battery/plate to clamp the front of the battery (and also in the process force the battery back into another fixed clip at the rear of the battery). Remove the screw (M8), the clip comes up and off freeing the front end of the battery; now you can slide the battery and plate forward. Sliding the battery forward releases the battery cleat on the back edge of the battery from the fixed clip on the battery tray (the fixed rear clip holds the back end of the battery clamped down onto the tray). Remove the battery and plate together as an assembly (generally move as far forward as you can then lift up with tilt to fuel tank and out), and now you have access to your screws/nuts. When you reassemble and reinstall, be sure to push the battery+plate well back into that back (rear) clip before attempting to assemble and tighten the front clip and screw. If you are sloppy you can put the screw in cock-eyed and it will cross thread. Might want to consider std AGM battery, I have have a very old optima in other car doing well and a more recent one that failed early, so I am now using an AGM group-48 in the 911. HTH

Socket with 9" extension...will be the same size as the 'two nuts' you've already removed. Just feel around down there, you'll get it!
In the photo you've included looking down at the offending fastener, it seems as though there's enough room to obtain a bite. I'd say to give it a few light taps with a rubber mallet; however, it appears the fastener passes through the base of the battery. Good luck.
