Restore interior upper door trim

Hi all!
I have two cores for the upper garnish rail trim that goes on top of the door panels. Looking at them I think I will try to restore them myself.

Is there any links or previous posts of someone who has done this?

Any pointers? I have removed the old vinyl which peeled off quite easy. However there are some spots where some of the foam stuck to the vinyl. What do I use to prep this to get a smooth surface for the new vinyl?

At the broader end there is a shape that I need to heat the vinyl to get a smooth fit. Should I leave this end to be the last part I do? What kind of adhesive should I use? I've heard there is heat sensitive glue. Is this what I should get?

Anything else?

My car is a 71 911T with black interior.

Thanks for any input.

Hej Jorgen... Acetone will dissolve just about anything. Be careful it doesn't make contact with anything important---it will instantly ruin it. Mineral spirits is also good but not as strong. I would back the vinyl with a thin foam liner. Compound curves can be tricky---need to know exactly how you are going to approach an area with c-curves before starting to attach vinyl. Secret is in the sequence of attachment. Play around with it and you'll figure it out. I've just started using this spray adhesive from Loctite. Excellent stuff.

Jorgen,

Jack Olsen recently started a thread describing how he fabricated new door panels and upper trim pieces. I don't think the answer to your question is found in his thread, but Jack is very responsive to PMs so you might see if he has any suggestions. Good luck.
