Pulled the carbs and began inspecting the body from 4-5-6. Set it down atop a towelon the workbench, turned it over and discovered a small ball bearing (maybe even a BB) sitting on the towel! No way it was there before. The middle throttle plate has a few round dents high on the inside, causing it to protrude a little.
A couple immediate thoughts: (1) Where did this come from? FOD or part of the carb? If the latter, I can't figure from where it came... (2) The only way I can figure said BB got moving fast enough to imprint the throttle valve (if indeed it did!) was with help from the piston or intake valve. (3) I'm f___ed in some fashion yet to be discovered! Anyone see anything like this?? Please - comments are quite welcome! Thanks in advance.

You should have won the lotto last night... you got close here. Have you inspected the intake valve and area from the middle throat area? No idea where it came from but would do a good inspection of everything before you put it all together!
Joe PS, buy a lotto ticket next time it comes up in case you have not used up all your lucky stars!

Yes. I pulled the manifold to get a better look. No obvious damage, e.g. pits, dings, etc. All three valves have equal amounts of soot around the valve. The intake and guide areas are pretty clean. No damage in the manifolds themselves.

did you ever see that shot of that Miata motor with the BB's all through it. It's amazing. I wish I could remember where I saw it.

"I estimate my cost for bb incident to be around $1450 plus a good amount of work."
Good thing he didn't have a 911..
