Oil Level and Temp?
Hi,
I was wondering, when measuring oil level, what is most important? Driving time or temp? For example, I was driving today and my temp got a bit over 194 (say like, 2mm over the hashmark), it rained and it dropped to a hair below the mark. My oil level was significantly lower than I feel it should have been. I feel like my thermostat doesn't open up until the temp gets to about 1/4 of the way from 194 to 248. Is that right?

Once the external oil thermostat opens at around 190F, the full oil system is charged. The gauge will reach midpoint and then fall slightly. With the engine running open the filler cp, you will likely hear the engine drop a few rpms and then check oil dipstick on level ground.
If the rpms do NOT fall, you likely have a vacuum leak.

Really time is not a factor, you really want to bring her up to operating temps of 194F to get an optimal reading.
Get a cheap IR reader and measure the lines at the external thermostat under P-side wheel well to insure the valve is opening when it suppose to.
