Sparco seat install - Brey-Krause brackets?

I've just purchased a Sparco Pro2000 seat for my '86 Carrera and now have to undertake the unenviable task of deciding how to mount it...

In searching the archives here and talking to my local dealer, I've been steered towards using the Brey-Krause side mount adapters. One thing that I've noted is that these mounts, because both the left and right bracket are exactly the same, move the seat sideways about a 1/2 inch towards the center of the car. Is this even noticable?

The dealer mentioned that the Pro2000 seat can be mounted either from the bottom or the side. Any thoughts on one method versus the other?

It seems from my brief research that the best method is to buy the BK side adapters, the Sparco sliders and the BK 16" slider handle adapter. Is this correct? Any dissention or agreement with this method?

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Dean

I bought a pr of recaro buckets and fabed the the brackets myself out of alu.... mine are fixed in position.. so if you looking for a slider.. i have no idesa but you can save a load of cash by fabricating your own.

well it depends on what you are using the car for. are you tracking the car or driving it on the streat? does anyone else drive the car? by mounting them solid you have no chance of the sliders failing in a turn or if you crash releasing the seat. by mounting them solid, only you or people as large as you can drive the car. if it is a street car and someone other than you drives it get the sliders.

Good point. I failed to mention that my wife also drives the car, so we need to move the seat fore/aft. We're going to use a custom cushion to adjust the height for me/her. But, we need the sliders.

Thanks,

Dean

This is the best method as far as I'm concerned. The BK parts are nice quality and they fit as advertised. And although they seem expensive it's a bargain considering the time you'll spend trying to fabricate a set of your own. As far as it moving the seat over I don't know why that would be the case. The BK sidemounts I used were symetric and the seat stayed centered over the side mounts. Further, mounting from the bottom is not approved for any racing activity as far as I know. Use the sidemounts as they are the method that the seat manufacturer has designed for.

Thanks for the input, John. The reason that the BK sidemounts move the seat over is because the left and right side mounts are the same. There is not a left and a right bracket so that the vertical part of the bracket is on the outside (relative to the center of the SEAT) of each slider. That is, if you were sitting on the back seat looking towards the front of the car along the long axis of the vertical part of the side mount bracket, the part that bends 90 degrees and is actually bolted to the sliders bends towards the left of the car for BOTH brackets. I know that was a mouthful, but do you see what I mean? It would shift the center of the seat about a half inch towards the center of the car.

Look here at the BK documentation for more clarification, if you are interested. http://www.bkauto.com/porsche/instructions/R-9060.pdf

Don't make me draw a picture!!!

Thanks again,

Dean

The BK brackets are nice. I have a set on each of my seats. I think the brackets are the way you describe in order to get a narrow seat to fit on 16" tracks.

have a recaro pole position seat and a recaro SPG seat. The SPG seat is similar in width to the Pro2000. The brackets for the SPG are similar to yours on the Pro2000 where the flange bends to the left on each. My pole position is a lot wider so the brackets are opposite each other. The flange bends to the right on left bracket and to the left on the right bracket so the width is 16"....if that makes any sense.

Anyway, the BK brackets work and put the seat in the correct place. Now you just have to figure out how to mount that pesky seat belt recepticle.

BTW, In an 86, you probably have power drivers seat but if you don't, you might be able to use your factory seat sliders.

Regarding the seat belt, look at part #24. Cool. Some guy over on Rennlist just posted a question about this so I thought I'd share. This part is from a '94 Speedster. It may be of help.

I have two pair of part number 13 & 14, the main seat mounts for a Recaro seat. Sparco uses the same type I believe... let me know if you are looking for these.

John,

Thanks for the suggestion and the parts pic. I hadn't even considered how I could still use the 3 pt. belt with the race seat in. That looks like the hot set up, though. Looks like I'll need part 27, too, unless I just create my own spacer for the other side.

Joe - I think I'm going to get the BK brackets as I know they will fit the Sparco sliders - exactly what I want. Thanks for the offer, though.

I'll post some pics of the seat once it is installed in the car.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Dean

john_colasante - seeing part #24 exists is of great help. However, where exactly is it being attached?

Anyone that has a speedster could they please post a pic of this area?

Thanks a bunch,

Just as a follow up to this post, I finally installed the Sparco Pro 2000 in my 86 Carrera cab.

I used the Brey-Krause brackets and 16" slider handle and the Sparco universal sliders. Everything fit together perfectly!

However, I did need to make one small modification -- because of the way that the BK brackets are made, they move the seat sideways toward the center of the car about 1/2 inch or more. With my wife driving the seat would have to be so far forward that the inner side bolster of the seat would interfere with putting the car into 2nd gear. So, I had to flip the brackets around so that the seat is moved 1/2" toward the driver's door. This makes for a slightly strange pedal offset, but it is fine once you get used to it. It also means that I can adjust the back of the seat up and down instead of the front of the seat (because there are multiple holes on one end of the bracket.

Driving the car with this seat is an awesome experience. I never realized how much energy I was using to just hold myself in place (even with harnesses) until I drove with this seat and was just locked into place! I can't wait to get the car out on the track now at Sears Point in January...

Happy New Year, everyone!

Dean
