Two week storage
 

Going out of town for two weeks and will be unable to drive my 1987 Targa. Should I disconnect the battery cables or do anything special for this period of inactivity ? Thanks.

I would think it would be fine for 2 weeks. I have not driven mine for 2 weeks at a time and it's always started right up after. Battery is less than 2 years old though so maybe that helps.

I've left mine for 3 weeks straight. As long as there's nothing wrong with your electrical system that would cause a drain...

BTW, if you are worried about battery drain, buy a trickle charger. Mine is hooked up every time I park it.

Since I have two cars I often don't get out in one of them for weeks. The 3.2 has never had starting issues and isn't plugged in, it's only the 993 that does. In the 993 there must be enough active electronics to kill the battery over a few weeks. I wouldn't doubt the 3.2 would start after months of inactivity.

Are pharmacists allowed to take that much time off???? :)

A month should be no problem... it isn't for mine and I can't trickle charge as there's no power where the car is stored.

Two weeks? Geez, that's nothing. I store mine for several months at a time with no activity and it always starts right up. Just keep a trickle charger on it and it will be just fine.

I think I went a little over 6 months this winter without even taking the cover off of my 911. That amount of time with no activity causes the soft rubber tires develop flat spots and make the first few miles of driving like a vibrating bed at an old motel. 10 miles in though and they get enough heat into them to round out.

These things are great. I have 3 of them for my cars. Funny story, I always used to put the Battery Tender right in front of the front wheel when the car was being stored up on the lift. My thought was that I would see it as I was lowering the car and remember to unplug it before driving the car. Well that didn't work and I accidently drove over the Battery Tender. It flattened it almost like a pancake, but it still works!!! I took it apart and straightened it out a little bit, that was only for aesthetics. Tough little device.

Trickle charger is great. Get one that mounts permanently in the car BUT make sure it has the brains to not cook the battery. I don't even think you can buy one that does not. I have two of the little battery tenders pictured. Like them.

Another thought is to buy a $15 bayonet type disconnect for the negative post. Pop the hood, lift the blade. Worries are over. Especially good if you have a slight parasitic draw.
