1975 Fuel Pump (1 in 1 Out) Problems & Replacement
I have just removed a fuel pump from a 1975 911S
It is the 1 in 1 out as in the picture. What concerned me, was when i took out the OUTPUT (The hex bolt at the end). I could see the electrical motor! Surely fuel dosent flow through the input (big black bit) and then through/contact the motor as part of the fuel path? If it does thats seems insane, an electrical motor spinning freely through the fuel, to me anyway. Per others who have rebuilt these pumps the fuel cools the pump.

Ok nuts, but thats how it seems to be. I suppose i was checking that something inside the pump isnt missing. Still hard to get me head around, i didnt know you could have an electrical motor spinning inside the actual liquid it is pumping, let alone fuel!

Most cars have the pump submerged in the tank now. Sounds crazy dont it!

fully disassembled, blasted, customized and restored 75 targa with factory hard top, 993 style turbo ft fenders, steel flares, C2 bumpers and rockers, 82 3.0 sc 9.5/1 engine with PMS flywheel, 964 cams, flowed heads, ssi's short geared 915 w/lsd, polybronze, bilstein,working lambda, modified and highly tuned cis, tensioners, pop valve, backdated exhaust and heater, 2300 lbs. no bolt left untouched. 1970 911E. Nice car but needs a re-do. |

Right guys thanks for the replies. I needed to double check as the direct contact between the electricals and the fuel just wasent something i was comfortable with. I'll run with it for now, and decide on moving to the 76 at later fuel pump at the front at a later date. I'll post a pic of my pump if i take it back out so everyone can see what i was so pedantic about!

![]() Some more craziness: ![]() Just replaced my sister's Nissan Murano fuel pump, what a PITA, fuel everywhere ![]() Note, make sure all ignition sources are off, like water heater, what ignites is vapors. Also static cling sources and errand sparks from dropping tools on concrete. BE SAFE ABOUT IT. Oh yeah for your lungs ventilate.

Good pics!
The top pic of the pump (i.e PD head or centrifugal) is exactly how i understood a pump to work (fluid segregated from motor), the second pic i had never seen before, hence my alarm. Thanks for that, it just shows you they certainly do design them that way, nuts. Interesting about the check valves inside the pump, i found one in the line to the filter also. Third pump, just gives me confidence, what the hell was i worrying about lol. you never would have thought i spent 5 years as a pump engineer (PD/Centrifugal). good advice, all noted, and learned for the future =) |
