Engine inspection in Riverside CA

I previously posted this to the 912 forum and didn't get much response:

Hello there. I'm interested in getting more oomph out of my 912, but I don't want to molest my numbers-matching 616, at least not much. I found a used Auto Craft 2.8 liter motor that's in Riverside, CA. I wonder if there is a kind soul in that area who knows what to look out for who would take a look at it for me. Please email me if you're able to help. Thanks very much.

Is it in the car or on the shelf?

Will they allow hand crank of it and using a video scope or a leak down tester? Cold leak down is not optimal, but you need to know what they will allow before some makes a trip out there for you.

Just my 2 cents,

Jim

Thank you for your advice Jim. This is all new to me so I don't know what I don't know.

The engine is disassembled. There's a crank and flywheel but it's not in the case. The cylinders and heads are off the case. The heads are assembled and supposedly have been rebuilt. The crank was supposedly magnafluxed. The pistons are new JE.

I guess there's no testing involved since its apart. Only a visual of the mating surfaces is possible. I don't know if anything of value can be derived from just looking at it and touching it.

If you have current true pics of it I suggest posting them on the Engine Rebuild forum as those guys there will be more familiar as what to look for.

A fellas just picked up a dis-assembled 3.0??? or maybe 2.7. He posted all the pics and we chimed in. Of course nothing like touching it but at least they can make their observations.

You can also pop over to the 912Registry and inquire. John Benton's shop is in Aniheim. He might point you in the right direction too. He is big in the 912 community.

If you want crazy performance, you can check out the Polo engine builds. The best of both worlds. The power of the 911 with the weight of the 912. But then again, we are talking crazy money too.

Cheers
