1987 Carrera 3.2 cv joints

Have 95k on car no noise from cv joints, boots good, dont think they have ever been repacked. I was thinking of torqeing cv joint bolts, removing the small clamps that hold the boot in place and injecting swepco grease via needle fitting in to cv boots and replacing the small clamps. I may not put another 20k on this car in my life time. Car has not been driven hard since new. Questions Should I: A leave it alone until I get clunking noise? B Do the above procedure I described? C pull the axle shafts down and take a look, then repack or replace? Also what is your experience, with how long the cv joints last. Not broke but retired and watching expenses. thanks

Captain,

Do not mix grease, they may not be compatible. If you plan to refresh/replentish, you need to remove all the old grease unless it is the same brand.

As far as "CLUNK" is it consistent with speed. Is it always there or when you turn, "clunk".

It could be two things:

Loose CV bolts, have you done recent work or over a year ago? I recenty re-installed my engine and after 300 miles developed a clunk only at take off. At first I thought it was my CV joints but it did not stay clunky while in motion, so that suspicion is out. Checked the bolts, D-side were all loose and 2 new replacement bolts were loose on P-side.

The other thing could be the rear wheel bearings, to test this, find a road with a burm and drive up it in a parallel to the road, if it clunks, it is your bearings.

My 2 cents

Oh I see. My bad, lazy reader. :-(

How Long? wow a loaded question. It depends on use, it appears she is weekend queen. I would say you will be fine with a little bit of maintenance if need be.

The only thing I would suggest is repack of the grease. It would not hurt and you can have the peace of mind you have fresh grease in there as it is basically sealed and over time could go rancid then it will harm the bearings??? It is basically a cheap service but messy work and you must re-torque those M10 bolts after 500 miles or use schnorrs lock washer for extra insurance but still re-check torque.

Also from what I have read new cv boots are crapola and will not last as the originals, like the ones you have on your car now I suspect. Just keep them clean.

The PO of my car had them rebuilt (his word) at 90.2K.
I do not know if he replaced the boots, he may not have.
I bought it at 91.1K and a boot broke open at 111.3K.
I decided to replace them at that point due to their age and as a preventive move, possibly out of ignorance or prudence. I kept the originals but boxed them and never did a autopsy.

If yours are original and not complaining, I truly don't know whether to tell you to wait or jump in. And only based on what I read from some folks, the boots aren't as robust as what they used to be.

I hope you can use my 91K miles for a rebuild and 111K replacement due to boot failure as a rough data point.

and BTW, a year after I did the replacement, my employer expedited my retirement plans, so I hope I understand your viewpoint a little.
