Why White Out License Plates in Photos
Curious to know why some of you white out, or otherwise hide your license plates when posting pictures of your P-Cars here on Pelican and other Pcar sites? I suspect you are worried about theft or identity theft but how could someone perpetrate a crime by knowing your license plate on the Internet. The general public sees it everyday as we drive around. Right? What am I missing?

Ever seen readers wives in "naughty" mags? where they blank out the face but show the body,
I think its along the line better safe than sorry. If a crim did want a quick ID change on a car he wouldnt drive about the streets looking for a black 83 targa he would come to somewhere like here. Last edited by MrKJBlue; 02-01-2003 at 04:28 AM.. |

Thanks for asking, I've been wondering myself? Should I cover my plate while driving too? Keith

It isn't whitened out, it's just a yellow plate. Till now I've never got a speeding ticket.

I own a quite special 1995 BMW M5 in the touring version. I have received a few requests about selling, from people who found me through the plate, shown on a BBS.
A contract thief gets an "order" for, say, a flat nose 930, original. Where better to look for one than on these boards? It is like a showroom for potential thieves. GeorgeK |

I agree with 89911 - unless one has a truly one-of-a-kind car worth a considerable amount of money, I don't see the connection. Granted, most of us have added our mods, tires, wheels, exhausts, etc, etc, but still, that's doesn't make the worth the effort to track it down to steal. I mean, you can find Pcars in every major city. And what is the relationship of showing your license plate and theft. I guess a clever thief could use the Internet search engines (the kind you pay for) to obtain your address. Still . . . . .

My $.02 ....show the plate....let the slimeys come to shop at your garage....and have a good place to hide the bodies!
Remember...the only good thief is a dead thief...make 'em good every time. After all...when the police arrive...if they do...the big kitchen knife in the corpse' hand is all they need to say it was self defence....so what if the knife came from your kitchen....maybe he got it before you shot him! Have a nice day..... Bob

It's bad enough I'm here under my real name. You know, in my mid 20s I didn't follow social rules. In fact, I bucked them.
Some man should have shot me with a shotgun, seriously--I used my 9 lives up already and regret all of it. I made a few enemies here and there. You never know when some divorced guy decides, you know, that mother f@cker, I'm going to hunt him down and make his life hell now. Know my name all you want, but my license plate? Nah.

In Eastern Europe, The M5 is a hot commodity (and mine is "one of a kind"). A friend has had 2 attempts on his M5 in the last year. Add to that the fact that there were half as much M5Ts built as RS2.7s, and you have a good target. And yes there are organised people that steal only on "orders" here. Why help them?

If I had a license plate as cool as Jack Olsen's I wouldn't obscure it either

You guys have it all wrong . . . don't white them out. . . change them.
It's much more fun . .. For example at Supermans engine drop Clinic I could have just whited it out. . .but changing it to 911LOV seemed appropriate. (not to mention the joy of dissinformation to would-be theives)

Yeah, forget about the stupid plates.
I wanna know more about that garage!!! French doors, tables, chairs, looks like a fosball table in the left corner. I'll bet he's got a wide screen and fridge in there. I wanna see more!!!!!! Actually not a bad idea for a thread, "Whose got the coolest garage?" Scott

Evren posted his plates for all to see. Next he should post a pic of his "puppies", who may or may not be sleeping near the car...
